What Guests Are Saying

Butte Lake Group offers a spacious campsite suitable for large groups, with ample shade and proximity to bathrooms that are clean and equipped with sinks. Visitors appreciated the scenic surroundings, including deer sightings and a nearby lake, although the road to the site is bumpy and could be improved. Some encountered issues with ranger interactions and access to amenities, but overall experiences were positive and enjoyable.

Group camping, B and C basically pull throughs on the edge of group area. Site is large and open to the back, fire cleared all underbrush, some trees remain but ash and that dirty dirt made for black feet quick. Extremely friendly camp hosts, very clean bathrooms, nicely maintained roads in the campground, 6 mi drive off the highway on compacted gravel needs some love. Filling water for trailer tanks done at the bathroom no spickets, around the group camp.

Butte lake was great, nice day use area, paddle board and kayaking was nice. There during full moon so fishing was bad ( other anglers same problem). Cinder cone trailhead right at the campground. 3 tables and bear boxes per group, 2 fire pits, group B fire pit is not raised and ground level pretty sketchy for kids. The big campfire spot for ranger speeches completely burned.

Great for groups, little bugs not bad though, no bees this year, little bit of a drive to subway caves and even more to north park entrance, great spot to check out Lassen

The 6 mi gravel road into the campground is pretty rough. The campsite was large with a convenient pull through and sites are not too close together. Flush toilets and a ware wash sink were a plus - we've been to primitive campgrounds so this was a step above. The lake was walking distance, beautiful and no crowds whatsoever. Cinder Cone hike was awesome.

We reserved the group sites for my school and planned a day hiking to Cinder Cone and kayaking with the students. When we showed up, the ranger was over-the-top rude, stating that if any car was touching dirt he would ticket each and every one, and that he didn't even want us there. He said the bathrooms were locked and the water was turned off, and he wouldn't turn it back on again (we had to go to Old Station and buy all of their bottled water). We had one outhouse for 60 people. We made the most if it though, beautiful campground and lake, the Cinder Cone was fantastic, we had no other issues besides the ranger. The next day we had a very nice ranger, so maybe the other one had a bad day, but partially ruined our trip by his comments and locking everything down.

We loved the site!
It would be amazing if there were pathways through the center area to the restrooms. Also, the road in was extremely bumpy and could use a good scraping.

Long 6-mile bumpy road to get here, but you don't need a 4x4. Huge site! More than enough room for our group of 13 with kids. The campsite is pretty spread out too, so noise doesn't really travel.

About half the campsite has shade. There were quite a few mosquitoes at night, so definitely bring bug spray. We also saw several deer right next to the campground every evening, which was really cool.

Bathrooms are very close. They are actual bathroom stalls with sinks, NOT pit toilets. After the first night they ran out of soap, so I'd recommend bringing your own just in case.

There was no check-in, but rangers drive around throughout the day if you have any questions.

The site came with 3 bear lockers, 2 fire rings, and plenty of parking for about 6 cars. Rangers told us the bears in this area usually don't get into cars, so we kept our extra food and scented items locked in our vehicles and didn't have any issues (we also didn't see any bears during our stay). The nearby lake was a great bonus! The drive to Lassen National Park is a bit far, but we had cell service for most of the drive.
