What Guests Are Saying
Butte Lake Campground offers a beautiful, quiet location with clean facilities, access to hiking trails, and a serene atmosphere surrounded by nature. Many visitors enjoyed the stunning views, wildlife interactions, and recreational options like kayaking and swimming. However, concerns were raised about the rough access road, lack of cell service, and limited information or support on-site, which could impact the overall camping experience.

Very open campground without a lot of shade, which made being at camp during the day/afternoon pretty uncomfortable in tents in mid-July. Also doesn’t afford much privacy. While sites are large, they are still close together. Bugs not really an issue. Mostly tents out here thanks to the 6-mile gravel road approach. We drove it ok in our giant SUV rental, but did come across a sedan with a flat on our way in. Alerted the camp host who immediately set out with bottled water and a jack (the folks with the flat had broken theirs). He was very friendly and helpful throughout our stay, and not afraid to enforce the 10mph speed limit!
Site itself was clean other than the dog poop someone left us. First time we’ve ever had to deal with that at a campsite—disappointing. Nice dish-washing sink. Bathrooms were ok, not the cleanest, but doable. No soap or lights so BYO. No showers, so please use the spigots beneath the water fountains to clean off your feet from the ubiquitous black gravel sand when coming back from the beach; lots of folks using the bathroom sinks and making a mess.
We were fortunate with good neighbors, but as we were there Fri/Sat nights, there was a huge loud music party over in loop A blaring their noise throughout the entire campground. Not exactly a National Park experience. On the whole most people seemed to be here for the lake recreation.
If you do come to hike, highly recommend the Cinder Cone trek, but make sure you go early. If you can swing it, make the 2-hr trip up to Lava Beds National Monument, too. Pretty unique place.

An open campground with well spaced sites. Clean flush toilets. Limited potable water at not all toilet buildings. Nice lake for swimming and small paddle craft. Numerous hiking opportunities. Six mile gravel road had limited dust, little traffic and was generally smooth, but undoubtedly the reason it was easy to get reservations.

Lovely campground, with access to the amazing cinder cone trail. (Highly recommended!)
The camp hosts do a terrific job, and the neighbors were quiet and courteous. Some of the sites are a bit close together, with little privacy.
The bathrooms (flush toilets) and dishwashing sink were very clean.
Wonderful place!

Location was great without much hassle to reach. Just a long drive to reach the campground on the dirt road as it kicks up a lot of dust. Wish I brought a canoe/sup board to go into the lake and that the restroom closest to my campground was filled with hand soap. Site was well maintained and clean in most facilities. There's a few areas to hike around otherwise you need to go drive out of the campground to see the other parts of the park

Butte Lake campground is peaceful, and the sites are large and far apart. I enjoyed staying here, but it's an hour-long drive to the main part of the park. Climb the Cinder Cone!
