What Guests Are Saying
Butte Lake Campground offers a beautiful, quiet location with clean facilities, access to hiking trails, and a serene atmosphere surrounded by nature. Many visitors enjoyed the stunning views, wildlife interactions, and recreational options like kayaking and swimming. However, concerns were raised about the rough access road, lack of cell service, and limited information or support on-site, which could impact the overall camping experience.

Great spot and the rangers were super helpful. The potable water was not on - but we had our own and they opened the dish sink as a big help. the hike to the cinder cone is amazing (and hard work for sure). nice campground well spaced and very quiet.

On my short list of campgrounds indefinitely! Went during the hellish 2020 fire season we had and this place was a sanctuary from all the smoke that choked the west. The pull off from the highway leads you onto a loose gravel road for a few miles that eventually gets you to Butte Lake. No need to worry, any car with a normal clearance will be able to make it on the loose gravel road. Saw a Prius zip through the road and if a Prius can do it, you can too. The campground is pretty standard run of the mill but there is running water and flushed toilets on site which is a plus. Pack in your own firewood or bring an axe since all dead AND down tree is fair game on federal land. No campsite host but during our stay CAL FIRE and NPS Ranger made their daily rounds. The campground within LOOP B is pretty evenly spaced except the campsite within the inner loop. Definitely aim for the outer sites. ONLY LOOP B is reservable and LOOP A is first-come-first-serve during open season. LOOP B is a 10-min walking distance to Butte Lake and even better, it's a 10 min walk to the Cinder Cone trailhead, which is a must if you're staying here. The hike is definitely difficult to get to the top of the Cinder Cone but well worth it if you're going to stay at Butte Lake. Even a hike pass the lava fields up to the cinder cone or around it is pretty amazing. After a strenuous hike, take a dip in Butte Lake which has a nice beach area and many nice soft sandy locations to spend a day on the lake. If you have kayaks/paddleboard/canoes, definitely bring them. Plan to spend one to two full days here in order to get the best of this campsite and Butte Lake !

The road to the site is ARDUOUS, and with all the $$ that the national parks make in donations, they could spend a little to make the road simply dirt, and not hard crazy gravel and all though we saw our fair share of honda civics and Toyota Camry's, I highly recommend 4WD. My trailer rattled apart in several places just from the trip in and out. However, once there, this was an AMAZING camp site. Due to it being off the beaten path, it was very quiet and peaceful since all the party animals head to the easy access sites. It's quite a far drive from the park entrance, but it is also at the Cinder Cone trailhead and on a beautiful lake with a lava flow like no other. We will DEFINITELY be back.

HUGE and quiet campground. The grounds themselves are well kept and the services are clean.

While the campground is removed from the more popular main attractions, I liked the remoteness of the location as well as it’s proximity to both the lake and cinder cone trail. The campground itself was nicely organized and you didn’t feel like you were on top of your neighbors. The bathrooms were close and usable.
