This site is really spacious and had room for ~3 tents, maybe more depending on the footprint. We camped here in mid August, and unfortunately dealt with many yellowjackets that swarmed any time we were cooking. Occasionally, smell from the nearby pit toilet wafted over and was quite stinky. The creek was beautiful, and a short walk from the site. Very close to the highway, and as a result had lots of highway noise. There was a good amount of shade during the day, but not near the picnic table or fire pit until later evening.

Had such a wonderful first camping experience at Wheeler Gorge! The campsite was incredibly clean and well maintained, and we enjoyed ourselves so much that we booked another stay the day we got back. There’s something so relaxing about disconnecting, slowing down, and enjoying the open space. Already looking forward to going back!

We were looking for a calm, mellow family camp out. We stayed in the campground and floated in the ponds and enjoyed the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere, even though we we’re 15 minutes away from town.

Loved this spot! It is a little far from the bathrooms though.

Nice campground, but you need to bring your own water since none is available.

it was good however the next camp site had their generator running outside the hours at night (all the way to 11pm) and nobody warned them or told them not to do that, despite written guidelines... and also our campsite was too close to the bathroom and the smell was not tolerable at some times, in my opinion this should site should had been empty and not be utilized for a campsite or at least provide a warnning for people who really wanna reserve it

My 4th visit to this campground because I really like it.
However, during my last visit (August) the horrendous smell from the bathrooms at Site 53 nearly ruined my group’s experience, especially at meal time. As we walked the property we realized that phenomena was happening all over the campground.
My suggestion is to avoid summer camping at Wheeler Gorge and wait for the temps to drop.

Great large site that held 2 large tents comfortably, 2 families of 4. We were next to the creek so the kids were able to play in the water and cool down. Bathrooms were close by, but not too close, and decently maintained. The only con is that there is no water, so you have to bring your own. We plan on visiting this site again.

We got locked into the campground over the weekend because of unannounced tunnel closures. Also, the bathrooms ran out of TP over the weekend.
The camp hosts were kind and helpful, bathrooms were clean, and the location beautiful. But getting cut off from civilization and emergency services without notice is awful. Instead of 1.5 hrs it took over 4 hrs to get home through some sketchy washed out mountain roads.
These closures are apparently happening all the times so I advise campers to check whether the 33 will be closed at the tunnels before the campground.
