About Sly Guard Cabin

The Sly Guard Cabin is less remote than other cabins on the Eldorado National forest and is a great choice for families with children. Sly Guard provides the cabin in the woods experience with the convenience of modern amenities. The cabin is near Sly Park Reservoir, also called Jenkinson Lake, the tourist area of Apple Hill, a variety of wineries, a number of hiking trails, and the historic mining towns of Coloma and Placerville. The Sly Guard Cabin was constrcuted in the early 1940s by the Forest Service as living quarters for rangers "on guard" in the Sly Park area.

It's a beautiful basic cabin in the woods - we really enjoyed taking walks in the trees and enjoying Sly park. The cabin doesn't have a lot of frills, but it's great it that's what you're looking for.

We really enjoyed our stay at Sly Guard Cabin. It was our first stay, and it just so happened to be over the 4th of July record setting heat dome where temperatures got up to 105. The cabin does not have screens on the windows (other than front and back door) so we were quite challenged to make the cabin bearable at night (because there are tons of mosquitos) and we made sure to leave during the mid day and evening heat - we spent each day on a shady cove at Sly Creek / Jenkinson Reservoir. We ended up sleeping with the front and back doors open with fans we had brought from home. If you are coming to Sly Guard Cabin during a heat wave, I highly recommend you pack some great fans!

The refrigerator was not able to keep food cold enough for me to feel confident it was a food safe temperature, and we were unable to freeze popsicles in the freezer. I notified the ranger station, but not sure if the issue was addressed.

Despite the above issues, we still really enjoyed our time and will be back. The kitchen has a microwave, toaster, coffee machine etc.

If you are a clean freak I recommend you bring some swiffer wet pads - there is a swiffer mop there but nothing to mop with. Next time I will bring something to wipe down the floors before we move our stuff in. Also, I thought there was a queen bed in the bedroom but it is actually two twins, so bring bedding for two twins but the queen sofa bed if you need it!
