About Atwell Mill Campground

The Mineral King area features the highest elevation campground in the parks. At 7.5 ft (2280 m), it is only open during the summer months. It takes approximately 90 minutes to drive the long narrow, winding, largely unpaved road that leads to the area and its two campgrounds. RVs and trailers are not recommended on Mineral King Road and are not permitted in campgrounds. Mineral King is not connected to the rest of Sequoia National Park by roads.

The mosquitos and bugs were unbearable, to the point that we weren’t even able to enjoy sitting out side no matter the time of day.

Overall I enjoy my straying there. Beautiful nature. spring water to drink. But I went there to rest from noise and were looking for peace but a lot of spot where taken families with children and toddlers and there were seeming days and nights. So I had to leave earlier as it is impossible to rest. Be ready no mobile connection and no shower.

I rode my bike to Atwell but did not have the energy to get all the way up to Cold Springs, which I regret. My buddy made it all the way up and said it looked like a much nicer campground. Atwell was not particularly attractive, as the Sequoias there were all logged, leaving mostly smaller trees. There were lots of flies during the day and then mosquitoes at dusk. The bathroom was clean and potable water was available. Being just down the road from the Silver City Mountain Resort restaurant was great - they had fantastic food, including pie that we brought back to camp for breakfast.

The campsite was absolutely beautiful, very off grid. The road is long, very curvy and very narrow. It was probably about a 1.5 hour drive up the mountain for 13 mi. Amazing off grid environment. Very active wildlife.

Clean bathrooms, stunning campsites, clean bear boxes. So easy so beautiful, only downside is the long drive into mineral king.

The campground was great and the bathrooms in good shape with TP rolls in stocks. First night there we had met our park ranger who reminded us the basics of camping in bear country which is always welcome.
I’m very proud of our campground in California!
