Azalea Campground

My partner and I stayed at Azalea campground during late December, using their first-come first-serve campsites. We got there between 3-4pm, and had plenty of good choices to pick from. This was a great park to camp in. The smell of pine and the surrounding trees made for a great sleep.
All the park staff we talked to were very kind and helpful as well, including check-in staff and staff at the market.

We stayed at site 24 which is right next to the trail from the visitors center to the General Grant Tree. It was one of the last sites available but because it was a little chilly (it lightly snowed the first of two nights) and it was out in the open it was really nice bc if there was any sunshine we got it! Reserving the site with the code at the kiosk was not intuitive, but one of our fellow campers helped us out. Very conveniently located for trail walking. The flush toilet bathrooms were heated/warm, which was a bonus.

Love it! Vamps are close together but if everyone is quiet and respectful of each other it is a nice time. Only trouble was when one group played their radio very loud. Could be heard loudly at our site 1/4 mile away!

Get the Recreation.gov app installed on your phone before coming to Azalea without reservations. Without the App and a valid credit card, you cannot rent a site when you arrive. There is a good 4G-LTE signal here, so you can download the app from the campsite. Site is almost level, 1.5" side to side difference, and the back of the site is higher than the road side. A big hunk of rock provides some privacy.
