About Cold Springs Campground (CA)

The Mineral King area features the highest elevation campground in the parks. At 7,500 feet (2280 m), it is only open during the summer months. It takes approximately 90 minutes to drive the long narrow, winding, largely unpaved road that leads to the area and its two campgrounds. RVs and trailers are not recommended on Mineral King Road and are not permitted in campgrounds. Mineral King is not connected to the rest of Sequoia National Park by roads.

We always enjoy our time at Cold Springs, just always remember, Mineral King Road is not joke. That is a long, windy, bumpy, hard mountain 1 1/2 lane mountain road. I only almost got hit by an oncoming car once.

First off, this is a beautiful campground! It's very shady, too, although there were a lot of bugs in late June. As many other people have said, though, sites are small and it's a 2-hour drive (one way) to get to the main entrance station to Sequoia NP. It's a great place to chill and close to some excellent hiking trails.
However, I made our reservation for two vehicles. I was allowed to do that and checked multiple times online to ensure we would be allowed to park 2 cars there. Both cars fit in our little campsite driveway 100% -- no overflow to the road, not blocking anything/anyone else, etc. But in the morning, we were told that we could only have one car after all, and the other car would have be be parked .25-.5 miles away in the overflow areas. I would have picked a different campground if this info had been given in the first place. It seems ridiculous to enforce this arbitrary and inconvenient rule, which is also not posted anywhere, which we were given no notice of, and which has 0 effect on other campers or the natural area.
I also agree with another reviewer who commented that there are rangers who will go out of their way to find things you've done "wrong"! Food is only supposed to be 5 feet away and when the ranger came around, she made a big deal of pointing out food that was maybe 10-15 feet away on our picnic table, literally handed me the mosquito repellent that was sitting nearby on our (illegal second!) car, etc. It's a fairly busy campground, it was mid-morning, and we were close to all our stuff, so the ranger's reaction seemed unreasonable. In my years of camping in the national parks, I've never encountered such an intrusive ranger.
I know most of this review is about the annoying stuff, but it really is a gorgeous place. Just cross your fingers they haven't changed any of their rules!

Sites are very small and close to one another. Your only allowed one vehicle. The female ranger does come around often and will harass you for anything she can find. Mineral king offers so many amazing trails with the road less traveled!

The road to the campground is narrow, long and not well maintained in some areas but the campsite itself was great.
