About Lodgepole Campground-sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park

Lodgepole Campground is located in the breathtaking Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks in central California's rugged Sierra Nevada range. Lodgepole is perched on the banks of the scenic and lengthy Marble Fork of the Kaweah River, at an elevation of 6,700 ft. The inspiring Giant Forest Grove and the mighty General Sherman Tree - the world's largest tree in volume - are just two miles from the campground.

Lodgepole is always a wonderful campground. We stayed at site 39… the folks at 38 were a bit close to us, but other than that, we enjoyed the stay! The bathrooms were maintained… I do believe they used to have lights, but we did not see any at night.

Campsite was tidy. Gate rangers were nice and communicated well. Camp hosts routinely checked campsites multiple times a day to ensure rules were being followed. Bathrooms were not impeccable, but were not gross either.

We stayed at Lodgepole Campground in early June and overall had a great experience. The weather was perfect for our visit, and the riverside sites are a real highlight - the sound of the river at night is wonderfully soothing and made for great sleeping.

The campground was packed during our stay, which is typical for this time of year, so I'd recommend booking well in advance. The location is hard to beat: the Tokopah Falls trailhead starts right at the campground, which made for an easy and convenient hike, and the nearby visitor center, café, store, and ice cream shop were all clean and well-run, a nice bonus after a day on the trail.

A couple of areas could use more attention from staff. The campground grounds themselves were reasonably clean but showed signs of needing more regular upkeep. The restrooms in particular weren't cleaned as often as we'd have liked, and this is probably the biggest area for improvement. We also noticed that quiet hours after 10 PM weren't really enforced, which led to some noise late into the night - a bit more attentiveness here would go a long way for guests trying to get some rest.

The space was beautiful, and we enjoyed the rushing river. The campsites are well kept and clean, but they are a little too close together. We felt like everyone was on top of us, it also seemed to be a busy weekend. Would go there again, but maybe during a less busy time

Lodgepole was the most well-equipped national park campground I have stayed at. It's a huge campground in a perfect location with easy access to pretty much all the main Sequoia attractions. Market is very well stocked - with pretty much any food you would need at very reasonable prices. Grill had good food and there were coin showers, both of which were unexpected and nice to have. Creek provided great white noise for sleep. Only thing I'd change is campsites are pretty close together with sparse trees, so minimal privacy, even at a walk-in one.

  • If your campsite remains vacant for 24 hours after your arrival date it will be cancelled and made available on rec.gov. You will be charged for the first night's campsite fee and a $20 cancellation fee, all other fees after that will be refunded. Recreation.gov policies apply to all reservations, cancellations, refunds and date changes.  Call (559) 565-4404 if you will be arriving 24 hours after your arrival date so your site won't be cancelled. To leave a message call (559) 565-3714.Upon making a campground reservation: Site occupants agree to follow ALL campground rules. Failure to comply may result in a fine. You are responsible for your guests. 
  • Quiet Hours 10pm to 6am- Music, talking, and generators should not be audible beyond your immediate campsite. Unreasonable noise is prohibited any time of day.
  • Tire Chains may be required at any time. Be prepared at any time of year for a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions. Check Road Conditions at nps.gov/seki . Vehicles longer than 22 feet (including trailers) are not advised between Potwisha Campground and the Giant Forest Museum. Visitors with vehicles over 22 feet in total length hoping to visit the Giant Forest or camp at Lodgepole and Dorst Creek Campgrounds are advised to enter via the northern, Highway 180, entrance to these parks.
  • Dangerous Rivers! Many drowning victims were playing near rivers. Rivers present a far greater danger than lakes or pools. Surfaces may look calm, but strong currents often run below. Be cautious walking near rivers as rocks can be slippery. Getting out of a cold, swift river is often impossible.  Falling Objects - Don't linger under dead, cracked, or broken branches. Run if you hear cracks or snapping from tree roots, trunks, or branches (know that sometimes there is no sound, and very little time to react). Report falling branches or trees to a ranger.
  • A California state fishing license is required to fish in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, and Sequoia National Forest lakes and streams. Fishing licenses may be available at National Park and National Forest markets.
