What Guests Are Saying

Moraine Campground offers a spacious and well-maintained environment, perfect for family camping and exploring nearby Kings Canyon. Campers appreciate the clean facilities, excellent hiking opportunities, and beautiful views, with a refreshing river nearby for cooling off. However, the campground is known for bear activity, which can lead to noise from car alarms at night, and some facilities may need improvement, such as bathroom cleanliness and better food storage education. Overall, it’s a lovely camping spot with room for improvement.

Was nice to move to a quieter. More family friendly car camping environment... It reminded me of the old sentinel campground environment. A bit harder to access the river but Really enjoyed it! 😀

Large, beautiful campground with excellent hikes nearby. I hugely recommend exploring Kings Canyon during the day! Just don't expect a good night's sleep there. Black bears have gotten bold about going after food in campsites and cars literally every night, so follow all food storage instructions and use the bear bins. And bring ear plugs! People set off car alarms throughout the night to ward bears off. Rangers went around saying car alarms don't do much and to shout and bang stuff instead. That helped for a night; then new people moved in and it was back to 10 car alarms a night. There's nothing quite like walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night when two car alarms go off right next to you warning of a bear. I did also see bears on trail, but they were much more wary and moved on when I made noise to make my presence known. "Keep calm and hike on."

1. Under-staffed at all levels which led to…
2. Lack of oversight of visitors which led to
3. Excessive numbers of people & cars on individual sites
4. Music being played at volume beyond the individual’s site
5. Trash receptacles overflowing and
6. Bathrooms used beyond their capacities.

First time camping at this location. I liked that they had a very nicely layed out campgrounds. We had 8 sites all bunched up and none of them felt close. The spacing was nice. The site was clean, restrooms were clean and well maintained. All the sites had functioning fire pits and thankfully each site had its own lock box for the food.
Rangers came by a few times to check on the campers, they were very friendly and knowledgeable about the grounds. Guided us to the safest river access and how secure our food in the lock box. Felt very welcomed by them.
We were impressed by the shower station nearby, we were not expecting it but we kinda liked a clean shower when being away from home. So many good things to say about this place, I really wasn’t expecting to write a review but I was very impressed. We’ll be adding this location to our list of good sites and will be looking forward to coming back.

This was my first time to visit Kings Canyon. It was just my wife and me. We were tent camping. I'd like to have ranked our visit as excellent or very good, but I had to rank it as good instead. Reasons why were 1) large group set up as a party camp playing music, 2) heavy bear activity included them turning over trash dumpsters adjacent to our campsite, and 3) ours and most campgrounds were on a slope, unfortunately the way many campgrounds were originally built. We loved the river for soaking and for enhancing the views all around (the path from our campsite to the river was treacherous. however, we did find good access by a short drive). We had a great hike up to Mist falls. Overall, we had a very good time.

Great views from the canyon bottom. Large flat sites plenty of room. Our site was near the river and it was very peaceful. Highly recommend

Moraine Campground is a great location in Sequoia / Kings Canyon NP. About 10 minutes from Road's End, so it's perfect for a pre-backpacking overnight stay for those intending to hike the ~41 mile Rae Lakes Loop. Facilities were well kept / functioning well at the time of our stay. Just a friendly reminder to stay bear aware and keep your food away from them and other critters!

General

  • If your campsite remains vacant for 24 hours after your arrival date it will be cancelled and made available on rec.gov. You will be charged for the first night's campsite fee and a $10 cancellation fee, all other fees after that will be refunded. Recreation.gov policies apply to all reservations, cancellations, refunds and date changes.  Call (559) 565-3792 if you will be arriving 24 hours after your arrival date so your site won't be cancelled. Upon making a campground reservation: Site occupants agree to follow ALL campground rules. Failure to comply may result in a fine. You are responsible for your guests.
  • Quiet Hours 10pm to 6am- Music, talking, and generators should not be audible beyond your immediate campsite. Unreasonable noise is prohibited any time of day.
  • Tire Chains may be required at any time. Be prepared at any time of year for a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions. Check Road Conditions at nps.gov/seki.   Vehicles longer than 22 feet (including trailers) are not advised between Potwisha Campground and the Giant Forest Museum.  Dangerous Rivers! Many drowning victims were playing near rivers. Rivers present a far greater danger than lakes or pools. Surfaces may look calm, but strong currents often run below. Be cautious walking near rivers as rocks can be slippery. Getting out of a cold, swift river is often impossible.    Falling Objects- Don't linger under dead, cracked, or broken branches. Run if you hear cracks or snapping from tree roots, trunks, or branches (know that sometimes there is no sound, and very little time to react). Report falling branches or trees to a ranger.   A California state fishing license is required to fish in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, and Sequoia National Forest lakes and streams. Fishing licenses may be available at National Park and National Forest markets.
