About Cottonwood Group

Download the NPS app prior to visiting the park – trail maps and more! Cottonwood Group Campground is one of the best places in Joshua Tree National Park for stargazing and wildflower viewing. The group campground is part of the main Cottonwood Campground and has three sites that are by reservation only. It is one of three group campgrounds in the park and the only campground that lies in the southern section. To get the most out of your visit Plan Like a Park Ranger Travelers who enjoy warm, dry winters flock to Joshua Tree from October through May, when temperatures reach between 70 to 90-degrees during the day and drop to 40 to 60-degrees at night. Summer is the park's off-season due to the uncomfortably high desert heat. Cottonwood Group Campground is at an elevation of 3,000 ft. and has little shade from vegetation; however, there are picnic shelters that provide shade at each site.

Clean, beautiful campground and surrounding areas for hiking. Great place to disconnect from work and the city, while reconnecting with family and nature.

Lovely campground. A bit away from the main sites of Joshua Tree NP, but there is lots to do in this area as well! You can camp, hike (we didn't do very long hikes), bike, climb, and probably more.

The last few times we've been at the Cottonwood group camp sites, unauthorized groups have come in to the adjacent sites at night -- after the visitor center has closed, of course -- playing loud music, partying and generally being obnoxious. Last time several of us went to the next site and asked them to tone it down, which they did. This last time, a family decided to picnic in OUR campsite, and started a fire by repeatedly dousing wood with lighter fluid in order to get it started. We had to take it upon ourselves to tell them that a) it was a private campground and b) the way they were lighting their fire was dangerous (it was causing great sparks to fly very near our tents). We never saw a ranger the entire time we were there, and after the visitor center was closed for the day, there was no way to contact park officials about the miscreants. Furthermore, because the restrooms at the visitor center were out of order, everyone was directed to use the restrooms at the group sites, and the women's restroom in particular became nasty, messy and very dirty, and one of the toilets was not working. All this was reported to the visitor center on Sunday afternoon, but no one showed up to service the restroom until Monday morning. So overall, the campsite itself was fine, but the experience was far less than desired. I very much doubt that we will return to Joshua Tree.
One more thing: someone has planted native vegetation throughout group sites 1, 2 and 3, surrounded them with chicken wire, and secured the chicken wire with pieces of iron rebar. The rebar sticks up about 2-3 feet, and is extremely dangerous as someone could easily trip over the chicken wire in the dark and impale themselves on the rebar. This is a serious safety issue and needs to be addressed.

    • One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
