The available campsites for the soft opening of Tuolumne Meadows were down to one. We had a site set back from the camp road and thus away from the travel trailers and their generators. Generator time is limited, thankfully. Easy to collect firewood allowed at least one campfire which we enjoyed. Rangers were lesser in number due to cutbacks but were there to hand out guides and maps and check in late arrivals by going to your campsite the next morning. Group campfires were every evening with quality presentations educating all ages about bio-diversity and how this relates to a healthy forest environment.

The staff were excellent. Cheerful, helpful and friendly. Bathrooms were convenient and clean. The campground itself is not pleasant, overcrowded and uncomfortable. The first "campsite" we got was not a campsite under any definition. It was a tiny patch of gravel at a 25 degree slope with nowhere to pitch a tent. If we had been there in summer we would have been in big trouble. Fortunately there was a single alternative available which the staff helped us switch our reservation to. This one was not much better but at least there was a small patch of ground to pitch our two person Tent. The campsites are jammed in like sardines and we heard many people complaining about both the density and the poor quality of the sites with bad drainage. After an expensive and long renovation this is very disappointing. Fortunately we only stayed one night before heading out to the backcountry so it was tolerable. Again, every staff person we encountered was wonderful and helpful and they deserve 5 stars, it is just the campsites that are poor.

Beautiful location, but some strange design choices...
The natural beauty of this campground is undeniable — gorgeous scenery, peaceful atmosphere, and great for families. However, a couple of things really make you scratch your head.
First, the bathrooms. They’ve clearly been remodeled recently and look quite nice — but why no lighting? After all that effort, they’re still pitch dark at night. Solar lights are inexpensive, easy to install, and would make a huge difference. It’s a basic need, especially for safety.
Second, the little iron fence poles with white plastic — what’s the deal? Not only are they visually out of place in a natural campground setting, but they also pose a tripping hazard, especially for kids running around. They don’t seem to serve any useful purpose and just clutter the space. It feels like someone overthought the design without considering how people actually use the area.
It’s a great campground overall, but a little more practical, common-sense planning would really elevate the experience.

Perfectly located in the Tuolumne Meadows area, with easy access to trails and area activities. It was lovely and quiet. We will be back.

H46 is a great site, with privacy, backing onto woods. Attended the Dana Campfire ranger program 2 nights - recommend. We learnt alot about bears! We were staying in Tuolumne to rockclimb, and from the campground you can walk to a number of great climbing including Cathedral, Matthis Crest and the climbs on Lembert Dome.

Our campsite was quiet. The campground is mostly very shady, which of course may be good or not so good. Restrooms are kept supplied and clean.

This site is immediately adjacent to one other site with compromised privacy, but has decent space and a few trees. Noise from the nearby bathroom may annoy some. The lovely river is a few steps away down a walking path. Sites on the new loop H seemed to be the quietest and best in this enormous campground.
