About Wawona Campground

Wawona Campground is located in breathtaking Yosemite National Park in Central California's rugged Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. The site is situated at the southern end of the park, 27 mi and approximately 45 minutes from Yosemite Valley, at an elevation of 4,000 ft.  Wawona was home to the park's headquarters in 1904 and historic structures still stand today. The majestic Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias is just a short drive away. Within Yosemite, visitors gaze upon waterfalls, sheer granite cliffs, deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area and much more. When on reservation, Wawona campsites are available to reserve up to five months in advance on the 15th of each month at 7:00 a.m. PST. For example, on January 15, arrival dates for the period May 15 to June 14 become available to reserve, and therefore, the full arrival date window would be from the campground open date to June 14.   Reservation Tips! Campsites in Yosemite are extremely popular and typically sell out in minutes. Login to your account or create a new account before the 7:00 a.m. (PST) release time. You may only add reservations to your cart and proceed with your reservation if you are logged into your account. The recreation.gov call center does NOT have access to additional sites or additional information beyond what is published on recreation.gov.  Yosemite National Park Campground Reservation Dates

I chose Wawona Campground located inside the park because of access to drinking water and flush toilets, store/gift shop. I came via Hwy 41. It’s near Glacier Point for a great view of Half Dome. Trails abound including to the wilderness. Leave early and drive to El Capitan and other attractions.

The site was clean and flat but in direct sun in the afternoon. The bear box was especially hot, so I kept food in coolers in the trunk of my car during the day. I know it can’t be helped, the rains being what they are, but the ground was so hard it was difficult to stake my tent. Also, no one seemed to know where I could take a shower, and that information was not posted anywhere. Luckily, I knew from a guidebook that you can pay for a shower at Curry Village or Housekeeping Camp in the valley. Nearby Wawona Market was the closest place for ice and groceries.

Beautiful, shaded, spacious (can accommodate 2 tents easily)! The sound of the river at night is so relaxing! The drive to the valley was pleasant. Driving by the El Capitan meadow is breathtaking!
Drive to Glacier point, it is a must see!

Wawona site 40B is a shared site with the neighboring site. There was not really a good area to put up our tent - it was so sloped. The water is essentially inaccessible from this site as there is a steep slope to get down to it. We were about as far away from the bathrooms as you could be within this campground so bathroom trips either were planned by a long walk or a drive to go. We would not stay at this site again if we could help it.

The site is uneven and you could only park on the edge of the street. Very uncomfortable

Decently spaced out. Clean roads and friendly rangers. Bathrooms are very very clean and instructions for the bear locker were thorough. Additionally, if you really need access to your devices, the cell service there is near-perfect.

Worst parking size in wawana. Every other site you could fit 3 super duty ford f150s this one could barely fit a mailbu and a rouge move a few rocks out since the rest of site has a lot of space. There are rocks stuck in the ground by the tilted bear box and next to the fire pit and picnic table because its disrespectful to move them since the ancient natives sat on those rocks many moons ago but aside from the half of it is in shade and far away enough from the highway.

We enjoyed our stay here. The campsites were clean and well maintained. There were no showers at this campground if I recall correctly. We stayed in a trailer comfortably. Generator hours are limited and intermittent. I respect that because it allows for the sounds of nature to be enjoyed. There were campers who did not comply and ran generators all day. Roads were narrow. The river was beautiful but very cold. All campsites are just a short walk to the river. If you can get a riverfront campsite, you can sleep to the sound of the water. The drive to the valley was about 35 minutes. The drive to the market, gas station, visitors center and dump station was about 5 minutes or less. Mariposa Grove was about 10 or 15 minutes away and offered easy access trails to view the beautiful sequoias. The shuttle system here was by far the best of all in Yosemite. Overall, I really liked it here. I would definitely stay here again.

Loved being next to the river. My site (B31) wasn't very roof top tent friendly, but no problem if you have levelers if you're planning to car/RV camp. The site and campgrounds themselves are awesome. Say hi to your neighbors :)

The campsite was nice, with a fire pit and a picnic table, although our site was not completely level. There were no showers on the camping. The restrooms were not so clean. Good location, about a 10 min drive to the mariposa grove, and 40 min to the Yosemite Valley. We saw some shooting stars aswell.
