About Wawona Campground

Wawona Campground is located in breathtaking Yosemite National Park in Central California's rugged Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. The site is situated at the southern end of the park, 27 mi and approximately 45 minutes from Yosemite Valley, at an elevation of 4,000 ft.  Wawona was home to the park's headquarters in 1904 and historic structures still stand today. The majestic Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias is just a short drive away. Within Yosemite, visitors gaze upon waterfalls, sheer granite cliffs, deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias, a vast wilderness area and much more. When on reservation, Wawona campsites are available to reserve up to five months in advance on the 15th of each month at 7:00 a.m. PST. For example, on January 15, arrival dates for the period May 15 to June 14 become available to reserve, and therefore, the full arrival date window would be from the campground open date to June 14.   Reservation Tips! Campsites in Yosemite are extremely popular and typically sell out in minutes. Login to your account or create a new account before the 7:00 a.m. (PST) release time. You may only add reservations to your cart and proceed with your reservation if you are logged into your account. The recreation.gov call center does NOT have access to additional sites or additional information beyond what is published on recreation.gov.  Yosemite National Park Campground Reservation Dates

Wawona campground served its purpose for us. We were staying one night to wake up and begin a backcountry hike the next day. As for the actual campground, it is okay. I didn't like that they don't seem to have areas to wash pans/utensils, etc. (they actually say to pour it in the toilet). The campground trash can was also full, so not sure when it gets picked up, but it was hard to add trash to it. The type of trash cans in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park are much better. Campsites are also a little to close for my taste. So it wasn't a bad experience, just average with room for improvement.

Overall, we liked the campground a lot and it was nice to be away from the crowds up in Curry Village. It was great to be able to swim through the Merced river which winds through the campground. However, the restrooms could really use more attention. Toilets were clean but over the weekend you could tell they were not being maintained. In the men's room the empty soap dispenser was never filled over the 4 days we were there. There is a market not even 5 minutes away, but beware: a can of spray sunscreen will run you over $18. That is not the campground's fault, but just good info to know.

I absolutely LOVED my stay here! The campground was spacious, clean, peaceful, and incredibly beautiful. Everything was well maintained, and there was plenty of room to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The check-in staff were also so kind, friendly, and welcoming, which made the experience even better. It was the perfect place to unwind and enjoy nature. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a beautiful, peaceful campground!

This is a perfect campground closer to the south entrance. Late summer is lovely with water access.

The river following the campsite loops is astounding. With depths ranging from only inches to over 6 ft, there is an experience for everyone. The facilities are easy to find and easy to use. The camp-store has everything someone could need, including lots of ice-cream.
Also. As an Oregonian, the water here tastes quite good compared to most of California!

While this campsite is over 12 hours away, I’ll definitely be making a return.
