Site 97 looked great on the map, we backed up to a trail and had a great view, but the site itself was not flat which made it very difficult for us to find a spot to put up our large tent. We found a spot, only to be told by the park ranger the next morning that we needed to move our tent within 25 feet of the table. Keep that in mind when pitching your tent. They will ask you to move it. The park ranger provided us with a document with a list of the campsite’s rules including the one that says, “tent must be within 25 feet of the table.” The road through the campsite was in need of repairs, but the restrooms were clean enough (no showers).

We stayed two nights. The area is beautiful. The hiking is good. The bathrooms were clean. The rangers were friendly. All was good except the sites themselves. It was incredibly hard to find a semi level spot. Large potholes on the road and crazy contoured sites. There are better places to stay in JTNP.

We stayed two nights. The area is beautiful. The hiking is good. The bathrooms were clean. The rangers were friendly. All was good except the sites themselves. It was incredibly hard to find a semi level spot. Large potholes on the road and crazy contoured sites. There are better places to stay in JTNP.

The campground is not up to standards of most national parks we have visited in other areas of the USA. The vista's are fantastic and the scenic road through the park is very good. The campgrounds along that route had decent roads through them. However the black rock campground even with water and modern restrooms had the worst roads for the loops. Bad enough to make walking on them in the dark a real adventure.

If you are here to see lots of Joshua Trees, this park is great. The staff are very kind and welcoming, which is nice. This campground is run by the park service, however it is a good 20 minute drive to the west entrance of the park, and about an hour from the north entrance - I wish this was made more clear in the park information when booking. Part of the fun of staying in a national park campground is to stay IN the park. The roads in this campground are in desperate need of maintenance, and the sites are not even close to level. The turns are very tight if you have a medium to large RV, but for a car or van they are okay. Next time I would either stay in one of the campgrounds in the actual park, or would pick a campground with hookups in the town of Yucca Valley or Joshua Tree if staying outside of the park.

Great spot for hiking, convenience to town, feeling like you're out there, but without being so far out there. Nice little gift shop, flush toilets, sites are tight, but less trafficked than the campgrounds in the park.

Take Interstate 10 to Route 62 into the town of Yucca Valley. Turn south on Joshua Lane and follow signs to campground, about five miles from the turn.
If coming south on Highway 247, go straight across Highway 62 and continue onto Joshua Lane. There will be no sign for the park as you cross Route 62.
Black Rock Campground is accessible via Interstate 10 and Route 62. From Interstate 10, take Route 62 into Yucca Valley, then proceed south on Joshua Lane for approximately five miles to reach the campground.
