Black Rock Campground

I really don't like this campground. I've never stayed in a truly flat campsite. The roads are in disrepair. The signage is minimal. The only reason i stay here is to get a jump on driving back toward Los Angeles.

The roads in the campground are very confusing and there are no directional signs. After circling and not finding our campsite we happened upon the campground host in a golf cart who led us to the site. The road was rutted with gullies and barely passible. We had camped here last year and I expected that things might have improved in one year but they have not. I understand that the NPS is suffering from unfortunate budget cutbacks. However, if there are not adequate funds to maintain this highly desired campground in Joshua Tree National Park, perhaps the campground should be closed until there is enough of a public outcry to demand that the NPS receive adequate funding.

Site amenities were great. Camp host had a power trip. Rude and a constant nuisance. Very windy during our stay. Would not recommend tent camping.

If you have a larger RV, Black Rock Campground is the perfect way to see Joshua Tree without the nail-biting worries accompanying taking your RV to a small National Parks site. Generous, fairly level spaces, as well as a dump station and water fill at the end of the campground mean that you'll be able to meet your basic needs, and the scenery is wonderful. A few neat hikes are available from this location, and it's under 10 miles to go into the park and hike from any of the other trailheads there. We also stayed at a smaller campground inside the park, and by comparison, I would recommend Black Rock very highly for larger vehicles or groups. The fact that it has flush toilets and sinks is also a neat bonus.

THE fact that they shut up the visitor center and camping registration for "LUNCH", when 4 or 5 people are working there sounds like poor planning. ANd i makes it hard to know what your supposed to do if you can;'t remember your site number. ALSO Ther are no level sites, and water is scarcse. THE BAthroom has flush toilets but no showers, tell me why? Staff was nice and very helpful. ENTRANCE into the scenic drive was backed up due to fee payments, they did let pass holders cut the line an go in. IT was a pretty busy park for february. IT WAS freezing at night and beautiful during the day.

Spacious spaces. Clean facilities. Dump and potable water available for the trailer. Several trailheads start at the camp. Nice nature/visitor center, with kind, helpful staff.
