Black Rock Campground

Gorgeous views, decent size sites.close enough to The park's western gate. The eastern half of the campground has recently paved roads, the western half has very broken pavement and potholes. The wooden restroom downhill from the visitor center is in bad need of maintenance.

Overall, I would rate this campground 8.5 out of 10

While the other JTNP campgrounds have interesting rock formations, Black Rock is nice too, with the best & biggest Joshua Trees I've ever seen. Good campground, & not as far from the other sights as I expected.

Nice campground, and we had a great campsite. Great location, bathrooms were clean. We didn't see the ranger patrolling but the campground was mostly very quiet. Most people were very friendly and considerate. One person with a large RV had 5 little yappy dogs in a small corral outside that were annoying. However, after the first night we assumed they were brought inside as we didn't hear them. Nice visitor center. I like Black Rock because it is a little out of the way and less touristy than other spots in Joshua tree. Great scenery and nice to have some vegetation in contrast to the rest of the park. One complaint, the signage on trails was terrible. Practically non-existent. Lots of trails around the campground and really hard to figure out what's what. We ended up on a steep trail that was probably not even a maintained trail because nothing was marked. And we're very experienced hikers.

There's a lot of deferred maintenance here, especially the roads and the broken door to the women's room. Not much you can do to level the campsites without damaging the land. Once we got our campervan leveled, the site was lovely. Good views, good access to trails, and relatively private.
