Black Rock Campground

This is a very nice campground and not far from the west entrance to Joshua Tree National Park with easy access to town for supplies. Beautiful landscape with Joshua Trees throughout. We were there the first week of March and the campground was less than half full, so very quiet. Sites are dirt and vary in size. There is no electricity or sewer, but there is a dump station with potable water, and water spigots interspersed throughout the campground. Sites are dirt, and sizes vary widely. Some are quite close together, and others are larger with a little more breathing room. The majority of sites are not level, with many being quite challenging. Most of the roads within the park are terrible. A few have been repaved, but the majority are very narrow and full of potholes. We had a pull-through site which was long and large enough to accommodate our 26 ft travel trailer and truck and not be on top of our neighbors. However, given all the challenges of the park, I'm not absolutely sure we would stay again.

The campground was very nice. Bathrooms were clean, sites were spacious (although it was somewhat difficult to know which grill belonged to which site). The roads were pretty rough and the site - while spacious - were not very level and basically just sand. The nearby hikes were not labeled very well. Took us a while and questioned several park employees to find the start of the hike. Still, we'd stay here again.

There's a lot of deferred maintenance here, especially the roads and the broken door to the women's room. Not much you can do to level the campsites without damaging the land. Once we got our campervan leveled, the site was lovely. Good views, good access to trails, and relatively private.

This is the best part of Joshua Tree NP, I would even claim the part with the highest density of Joshua trees. Conveniently spaced campsites, cool hiking trails, close to city with restaurants, shops etc.

Great views, excellent staff in the nature center, clean bathrooms, and some small wildlife! That said, the water spigots are few and far between, the site layout is confusing and a number of campers got lost trying to find theirs, and the asphalt is quite soft.
