Site 14 should never have been open for reservations. We were able to make a 4 night reservation from July 21 to July 25. When we got there we were shocked!! The trees on this site and much of the area had been leveled flat by tornado winds 2 1/2 years prior according to the camp host. They had cleared the other sites by Site 14 had tree stumps throughout with tree limbs littering the area. It was a hazard! Also, there was NO TABLE even though the site amenities said there was. The host gave us a folding table to set our camp stove on but we had not place to site. So we ate standing. The host was surprised we were allowed to make a reservation. I see now on the website that this site CLOSED. Would have been nice if someone from Recreation.gov had contacted us to explain the conditions rather than us driving 3 hours to arrive at a chaotic mess. I'm extremely disappointed that nobody reached out to us about the sites condition.

General
- Due to a high wind storm back in 2022, many trees here were blown down. In the Spring of 2024 the USFS cleared the down trees. Today Bear Lake Campground has less trees than before, but the grass is starting to comeback along with the flowers. Also note that because there are fewer trees in this campground it can be "very windy" at times. Please be prepared for this when you camp here.
- This Campground has a limit of 8 people; either 2 tents and 2 vehicles OR 1 RV in each campsite.
- Caution: bears frequent the area. Be aware; keep a clean camp; Forest Service regulations require food and cooking utensils be stored in secure containers or locked in vehicles.
- First-come, first-served campsites are available.
- No horse sites are available.
- Click here (http://www.fs.usda.gov/psicc) to visit the National Forest website.
- Due to the remoteness of the campground, real time information for the campground is not available. Contact the San Carlos Ranger District office for further information at (719) 269-8500.
- Don't Move Firewood: Help protect our forests! Prevent the spread of tree-killing pests by obtaining firewood at or near your destination and burning it on-site. Moving firewood is illegal in some states. Visit dontmovefirewood.org to learn more.
- Two vehicles included in the camping fee. $10 for additional vehicles.
- Firewood is available for sale at host site for $10.00/bundle.
