Blue Lake Campground offers a fantastic location with excellent facilities and helpful campground attendants, providing a clean and well-maintained environment. The wildflowers are a highlight, and fishing at Blue Lake is enjoyable. However, the area is very windy, making tent camping challenging; it’s recommended to use hard-sided campers or RVs instead.

We stayed at site #8 in late September. It was fantastic - access to the creek was directly behind our campsite. The trail along the river takes you to Blue Lake less than a quarter mile, and from there the hike around the loop up to Bear Lake was just wonderful. The whole site was unbelievably clean. The chipmunks, blue jays and camp robbers were a bit too tame, coming right on to the picnic table while we were eating. It was absolutely delightful!

This was an absolutely gorgeous site. Husband, our dog, and I did a little exploring when we got there mid-day and walked the trail around blue & bear lake. If you plan to hike in surrounding areas make sure to check in at the site first! They will give you a pass that waves the parking fees (not sure which fees it waves for). It’s high in the mountain so weather was colder than closest towns temps, but an absolutely beautiful view of the snowy mountains.

Blue Lake campground is small and lovely, lots of trees, , with a creek and the lake close by. Nice easy hiking trail leading to the other close campground, Bear Lake. The road up to the campground is washboard in some places, but basically no problem if you drive slowly. We would like to return here.

From Colorado Highway 12 south of the Town of Cuchara, take FSR 422 4 miles west to the campground.
The campground is accessible via Colorado Highway 12, which is approximately 4 miles from FSR 422.
Elevation: 3201 feet
122 mi drive to downtown Canon City (about 2 hr 19 min)
Policies & Rules
General
- Due to a high wind storm back in 2022, many trees here were blown down. In the Spring of 2024 the USFS clear cut the area. Today Blue Lake Campground has no trees, but the grass is starting to comeback along with the flowers.Also note that because there are no trees in this campground it can be "very windy" at times. Please be prepared for this when you camp here.
- This Campground has a limit of 10 people; either 2 tents and 2 vehicles OR 1 RV in each campsite.
- Caution: bears frequent the area. Be aware; keep a clean camp; Forest Service regulations require food and cooking utensils be stored in secure containers or locked in vehicles
- First-come, first-served sites are available.
- No horse sites are available
- Due to the remoteness of the campground, real time information is not available, contact the San Carlos Ranger District office for further information at (719) 269-8500.

- Don't Move Firewood: Help protect our forests! Prevent the spread of tree-killing pests by obtaining firewood at or near your destination and burning it on-site. Moving firewood is illegal in some states. Visit dontmovefirewood.org to learn more.
- Two vehicles included in the camping fee. $10 for additional vehicles.
- Firewood is available for sale at host site for $10.00/bundle.
