About Purgatoire Campground

Purgatoire Campground is nestled near the headwaters of the Purgatoire River in the beautiful Culebra Range of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The primitive campground is laid out on two loops. One is a large grassy meadow with sites that accommodate equestrian campers and one that is wooded with aspen and spruce. Constructed by the Youth Conservation Corp in 1976, Purgatoire was originally named Potato Patch Campground. The river provides nice fishing and a trailhead attracts hikers and horseback riders.

Beautiful campground, very private sites at least in upper loop. Vault toilets are primitive and smelly, but are cleaned and well maintained. Water available from hand pump, untreated well water with recommendation to boil if in doubt. Access to North Fork trailhead

We stayed here a couple days ago and it was wonderful. The campground host had firewood for sale. The sites were nice and well kept. There is a lot of wildlife around which made our stay enjoyable. Our dog even loved it! The stars are beautiful from this campground. Seemed pretty busy so I advise making a reservation beforehand. The only problem I had with this campground is the bathroom between the fork. It smelt horrible on the womens side. I almost got sick by the smell and had to hold my breath. Other than that the stay was pleasant. We will be returning in the future.

Purgatoire Campground is a nice, quite and scenic campground nestled in the forest. Our stay was wonderful and relaxing, and not very crowded. We enjoyed hiking in the area. The camp host, Steve, was very polite. He greeted us as we drove in and made sure we were aware of any important topics, as well as offering additional information and answering any questions. The campground spaces are far enough apart to offer a bit of privacy with trees between sites, in most cases. Bathrooms were relatively clean, but could have used a little more attention. *Be sure to check fire restrictions frequently before going. We checked a week before and were told we could have a campfire. Only to arrive and find out that the restrictions had been raised and campfires were NOT allowed. Glad we brought our camp stove along, and were not solely relying on cooking over a campfire. Definitely missed the ambiance of a campfire, though. Can't wait to visit again!
