Gallo Campground

Gallo Campground was a great choice while visiting Chaco Culture. The nearest hotel is over an hour away. I was able to view the breathtaking starscape a lot more knowing that all I had to do was crawl into my sleeping bag afterwards instead of making a long drive in the dark. The stars were really amazing since there is so little light pollution out there (hence the hour plus drive).

One of the most amazing places I've camped. The campground itself was very clean and quiet. The sites were close, but not on top of each other. The night sky was probably the most amazing part of the experience. It was well worth the trip out to the park. We only had one day/night in the park, and I feel like 2 days/nights would have been much better in order to see everything. We'll definitely try to visit again!

The closure of the campsites in the small box canyon was a great disappointment, although I understand the safety reasons for doing so. The campground is too crowded and all sense of privacy is gone. The biggest addition that would be helpful is some sort of coverage over the picnic tables. Shade is essential to make the campground comfortable. My campsite was stiflingly hot in mid-June, while the picnic tables at the Fajada Butte Overlook were quite comfortable because of the shade provided by the latillas.

Awesome campground. Camp host was fantastic. Reservation system could be improved. There are a lot of “no shows” and spaces go to waste when people could be using them. Due to the long drive in there should be a cut off time when sites get released each evening if people don’t show.

We enjoyed the solitude at this campsite. Not only was part of the campground closed off (due to rock falls), only about 2/3 of the campsites were occupied. The size of the campsite was more than enough for one car and a single tent (neighboring site had 4 tents, two trucks and made due). The posted quiet hours were observed and the restrooms were exceptionally clean.

We appreciated campfires are allowed. Good restrooms. Felt very safe. Take lots of water Gatorade and food as nothing is available and no cell service. But the trade off of ruins all around is worth it. Visitors Center very informative and open Sat Sun. Being older we took solar lights and set our tents up between two sites so we could walk back and forth. We were confronted by a semi rude rv camper that our lights were not welcomed. I understood so we had to minimize our light. Remember it's preferred as a night light site and as little light and noise as possible is courteous. It's was wonderful get your reservations early sites go fast. Campsites you pay but for Native Americans day passes no fee.

Great dry camping.. really clean bathrooms with flush toilets/deal-breaker.. but I love the desert, so what else can I say!!

Great camping at Gallo. Quiet and serene. Stargazing is a must! Spend a couple of days exploring all the hikes, it's worth the stay after the long road in. The road from 550 was mostly good. 3/4 of the way in, it gets rough with washboard gravel road. No AT&T service. Bring all that you will need for your stay, there are no services once you are off the main road, which is 21 miles from the park area.

If you go to Chaco you will need more than one day and that means you will camp in Gallo Campground. Camping at a historic place adds to your understanding of it. Be sure to talk to fellow campers and see what drew them to Chaco and to hear what amazes them. Enjoy the experience.
