I hadn't been camping on Cumberland Island since I was a child, and I decided to "break in" my kids with their first camping experience at Cumberland. They had no idea what they were in for but they had such a blast! We all did. We can't wait to go back. Such beautiful scenery and wildlife EVERYWHERE. My only complaints are about 1) firewood and 2) the bikes/bike rentals. The firewood you can purchase from the ferry was $6 per bag. We bought 7 bags while we were on the island, and it was AWFUL. The firewood was wet and just would not stay lit for long. We brought fire starters and tried drying out the firewood while we burned the first pieces, and it was just miserable. We ended up collecting dead bamboo which worked great but we were very disappointed in spending almost $50 for crappy firewood. We complained to the guy on the ferry, and he admitted they get a lot of complaints about it. Not sure why they're still using the same firewood company. Definitely recommend bringing a camp stove as back-up! We learned our lesson the hard way :) My boyfriend and I rented bikes one day to ride to the Peach Orchard mansion, and we had a blast. I wished there had been kids' bikes to rent! My only complaints about the bikes are that they really need some tuning up, and the rental process was like people fighting over flat-screen TVs on Black Friday. There was a lot of yelling and shoving, and it was ridiculous. I am sure there could be a better process of renting bikes. Suggestion: maybe when you book your ferry, you have the option of expressing interest in renting a bike on the island and they could generate a list of who booked first and go by that on a first-come, first-served basis. Some people had planned out their whole day trip on the island based on renting bikes and didn't get there quickly enough. Thankfully we had an advantage of being in line before the ferry arrived. Overall, we plan to bring a camp stove and our own bikes next time...but we had a GREAT TIME!

Camping at Cumberland is a magical experience. We had group ranging from very young to very old and everyone enjoyed the trip. Just enough amenities for those who aren't hardened campers and plenty of wild for those who are. A great camping community. It is an island - so be sure and check the weather for your trip and come prepared.
