Lake Winfield Scott Recreation Area

Remote location (which is what we were after). Lovely lake on which we canoed. Biking around the area was excellent. Friendly staff. Clean facilities. We enjoyed our stay!

We loved the location and staff are very friendly and helpful. Next time, we'll probably bring our tent, however, and stay in the campground rather than the cabin (see below). From the cabin/campground you can easily walk to the AT and experience spectacular vistas from Blood Mountain (take Jarrard Gap Trail to AT to Blood Mt, then back down but return by Slaughter Creek Trail). You can also hike up to Blood Mt from Neal's Gap -- drive to the Byron Reece trailhead parking, just past Vogel State Park. The lake is small but peaceful. We did not see any water fowl while we were there. The stars at night are spectacular, as there is very little light pollution and you are at elevation. We biked on road and enjoyed canoeing on lake.

We visited Blairsville (recommend dinner at Michaelee's Italian Life Caffe) and Dahlonega and highly recommend a trip to the Byron Herbert Reece Heritage Farm (near Blairsville), the John C. Campbell Folk School (Brasstown, NC), Brasstown Bald (take the 0.6 mile hike from the parking lot up to the top of Georgia). We briefly visited Vogel State Park (several CCC structures there) and enjoyed shopping at Mountains Crossings (on AT).

The inside of the cabin was poorly equipped (don't assume you'll have what you need in the kitchen), and it sorely needed a good cleaning. We saw and heard several mice in the evening and night, and it was no wonder when we discovered old candy wrappers, etc underneath the beds -- left by previous occupants. I recommend you bring your own cleaning supplies and thoroughly clean the cabin before you move in with your things. Bring mouse traps. The cabin is along a road, and it does not have a view of the lake. The fire pit is a great place to cook out if it's not raining (it has a grating you can use to grill). Make sure you buy plenty of wood when you arrive. The driveway is quite steep, and the gravel loose, but with a little practice, you'll manage -- especially if you have four-wheel drive.

I really like this campsite, having stayed in the same tent site on three occasions. I like the lake for fishing. I like the trail up to see the Appalachian Trail. I like the distance between campsites so you have privacy. The managers, Jeff and Stephanie, are competent and caregiving.

Awesome place sites are well spread. Camp host was really nice and helpful. They have firewood and the bathrooms and showers are really clean. No cellphone service for verizon.

Beautiful area, nice and peaceful. The roads and sinage could be improved though. The bathrooms and showers were clean as well.

Loved our experience at this campground. The site we had was very private and well kept. The manager was very friendly and attentive - she made sure we were settled in and gave us a packet of info about the area. Bathrooms and facilities were clean. All around, a wonderful camping experience. Will return.

Beautiful campground. Very close to Vogel State Park which is a beautiful Park.

The campground hosts were great (Stephanie and Jeff). They were all over the place keeping things in good order and they checked on us daily. (My usual experience with hosts is never even seeing them.)
