We’ve stayed at Mālaekahana Campground twice now in the B sites, and previously we stayed in the A sites. Every time it has been a great experience. The sites are well maintained, the bathrooms are clean, and everything feels organized and comfortable.
The rangers come by in the morning, collect trash bags, and really take care of the environment, which we truly appreciate. You can tell they care about keeping the campground clean and beautiful.
Sometimes we’re not lucky with the weather, but it’s the North Shore — you just have to be ready for a little rain. Even with that, it’s still such a special place. Whether you’re coming with a group of friends or just want a quiet getaway with your partner, it’s perfect.
The beach is amazing and very close to the campground. It’s great for kids, and you can enjoy swimming and beautiful sunsets. There are outdoor showers as well as regular showers, which makes everything very convenient.
The only downside is that you have to book in advance through their website, and it’s not the most user-friendly. But overall, it’s a wonderful place, and we’re happy to keep coming back! Highly recommend

A good place for camping, great for families with children, clean, sandy beach, reef, I almost always see turtles there, there are toilets, a table at each site, and several open areas with sinks. You need to bring your own barbecue grill, and the gates are closed at night to keep out unwanted guests

Super cute campground with a ton of space available for camping. Each site has a picnic table associated with the site number you reserved. I didn't see any fire pits, so if you want to have a fire, bring your own pit/grill. Some sites are in a bit of a gulch like area, and I could see it flooding on those sites if it rained too hard. There are sinks with running water throughout the campground and two main bathrooms. You'll need a reservation to the campground for camping overnight, and the gates close around 7pm. The beach can be accessed all day without any reservation needed.

I'll start with the cons first:

The chickens are out of control. They aren't aggressive, normal Hawaiian chickens, but the roosting at 3:30am is just awful and they don't stop until sunset. They're a nuisance and it made for a lot of short nights of sleep.

There are a ton of cats. The ones we came across were mostly friendly or kept their distance but I'd recommend taking your trash to the cans at night or they're going to dig into it. I love cats but I don't think the grounds keepers should be providing food to them (witnessed this first hand), just creates a massive breeding ground for them.

Pros:

Really friendly and welcoming staff.
The wood guy was also super nice and delivered wood quickly.
Location we stayed at (G-2) was great.
Restrooms are small but clean and adequate.
Showers near our site had 3 spigot and worked fine.
Loved the wash stations.
Campsite was clean and had no issues.

Overall impression: if I stayed again I wouldn't camp, I'd get a hale for sure. The chickens kept everyone exhausted. But I would still recommend this place, it's beautiful and well kept. Just be prepared to lose sleep on behalf of the chickens if you camp.

The campground had potable water at every tap and a great beach to lounge on. Campgrounds had a decent amount of privacy and many different camping options. The only thing that would round out the full experience is having at least one shower with some walls around it. Even if the top is open, it would still allow people to fully clean themselves off after camping for multiple days in a row. Thank you for the wonderful beach site!
