About Walker Cabin

Walker Cabin is nestled among trees just off Crooked River Road #233, which leads into the Gospel-Hump Wilderness Area, in the Nez Perce National Forest. The cabin was originally built around 1930 as a summer home. Jerry and Helen Walker purchased the cabin in 1967, then donated it to the U.S. Forest Service in the 1980s. It is now available for public recreational use. The cabin must be reserved in advanced; there are no walk-ups.

It might be time to just tear this cabin down. It is extremely breezy (door cracks, gaps). The cooking wood stove is NOT safe/operational as there are multiple smoke leaks from it (screws missing in pipe). There is a really bad mice problem. It's mildly better than a lean-to.

We stayed at Walker Cabin August 14th, it was a great stay. The cabin was clean and my family enjoyed the small stream that runs next to the cabin. The outhouse was a short 30 steps away from the cabin and there was even a battery operated light in it! There were fires in the area at the time, we were thankful for the communication with the firefighters and rangers from Elk City. Elk City was a nice little town. We would stay again!

I was informed to call to the code for the cabin prior to arrival. I called for two days straight with no answer & no voicemail setup. Also attempted on online chat. Once connected it said 13 min wait time, then 22 min wait time. After 30 min off waiting on the chat it switched to “no agent available”. There’s no cell service out there but we had planned this trip weeks in advance and were already packed and ready to go. We hoped there was going to be someone that knew the code. There wasn’t. I was charged for a cabin that we couldn’t even stay in & still have not gotten a response back from their “ customer service “.

Takes a long time to get there from store and back .the beds are lumpy and covers are dirty and itchy took them off but its didn't help. need to stay more than a day to go threw it and clean ,was hot and buggy and took a long time to cool off

Have been to this cabin before. It was also during 4th of July. Many more people there this time. Because the cabin is close to main road it is very dusty. There was a very nice picnic table and benches and fire ring. There are no utensils at all in the kitchen. No plates, bowls or cups. I mention this because it was the only cabin that was like this in the last 15 years or longer. There was no splitting maul, regular shovel or hatchett. There were large pieces of wood no kindling at all. The mornings were very cold and we needed a small fire. Fortunately we had a hatchett with some tools we had in the truck. We rode ATVs and enjoyed the trip to Lost Horse Lake and the views of Gospel Hump Wilderness. The curtains that were in the cabin really added a nice touch.

A very quaint little cabin in the woods. Right off the main road and no direct path to Crooked River but still very charming. Gnome Mill Site has old buildings to explore prior to the cabin, there’s an airstrip that is fun to explore and provides walking access to the river across from the cabin, and Five Mile Campground has a sweet little fishing hole. Roads beyond 5 Mile get a little gnarly but fun to explore in an off road vehicle.

Nice little cabin near Elk City. Went up April 9th and there was some snow on the road, definitely manageable in any awd or 4wd vehicle. The cabin is pretty dark, so we brought battery operated string lights which was a great idea. We didn't really know how to use the wood stove, but there are some directions next to it and for dinner we did grilled cheeses & tomato soup, which was very easy. For breakfast we did huckleberry pancakes, eggs, and sausages, also very easy despite not being familiar with wood stoves. Both doors had signs saying "do not use door, emergency use only" which was confusing, but they both work. There was plenty of wood for us. Found some mice droppings, but didn't hear or see any mice when we were there. Other people commented on the mattresses - it's a forest service cabin, not a hotel.

Would love to come back when there's no snow and do some hiking in the area!

Loved it here! The fall leaves were beautiful and we saw plenty of wildlife. The ranger station in Elk City was immensely helpful with questions about the area. FYI, the cabin in almost 10 miles back, not 8. Yes, the cabin is dark but that's partly because it wasn't built to maximize natural light. We brought multiple battery lanterns and read just fine after dark. We brought our cast iron and made chili and cornbread on the cookstove. It took some trial and error the first night so we ate later than planned but it was hot and good. The temp drops when the sun goes down so pack extra blankets in the fall. The mattresses are a little hard but the 4 of us slept all night. Flannel fitted sheets and sleeping bags with blankets tucked inside kept us toasty. We had fun exploring the mining towns and stopping at the historical sites along the way. The people of Elk City were super helpful when we had a tire leak. All in all, a great and memorable trip. We loved this cabin and the unplugged relaxation we enjoyed. We'll definitely be back!
