About Walker Cabin

Walker Cabin is nestled among trees just off Crooked River Road #233, which leads into the Gospel-Hump Wilderness Area, in the Nez Perce National Forest. The cabin was originally built around 1930 as a summer home. Jerry and Helen Walker purchased the cabin in 1967, then donated it to the U.S. Forest Service in the 1980s. It is now available for public recreational use. The cabin must be reserved in advanced; there are no walk-ups.

I personally enjoyed the trip with two friends of mine, but this place is in serious disrepair. The two wood stoves are working well, and the wood was well stocked in the shed behind the cabin, but those are basically the only positives. The mattresses in the bedrooms and the bathroom are somewhat reminiscent of a horror film. I've stayed in some rustic places, but $40 a night is asking too much for this place. If the Forest Service has the money, I think they should bulldoze it and rebuild a simpler cleaner and brighter place. Not a lot of light inside and a warning posted about mice giving you diseases. All that being said, the surrounding countryside is gorgeous and easily accessible by walking, hiking or snowshoeing in any direction. Hopefully some improvements can be made to the cabin itself!

Great spot. It was left very clean by previous users. The window of the kitchen door was broken out when we arrived - we tacked some corrugated metal over it. The wood stove surprisingly heated the whole cabin and other rooms very effectively, almost too much when we packed it full before bed. We only used the wood cookstove once, as it was slow to heat up and double stoves is just too much for the little cabin. The place could use some better furniture... the govt issued chairs circa 1968 don't really invite much relaxation. There are fun ghost towns nearby to explore, and xc skiing and snowshoeing to do on many roads and trails. There was less snow the further South we went up into the valley, kind of unituitive, must be something about the terrain. Elk City is worth a trip. Overall a great stay over the New Year!

First time staying at the cabin with snow on the ground. Someone filled the wood shed with green/moldy wood but if you can climb in, the back row was still good wood. Stove burns very hot and took a little bit to get the hang of keeping it going all night. Super great time. We'll be back.

Unfortunately I can only give 1 star. We were not advised that during the winter, no place is plowed to park a vehicle. With the cabin being available to rent during the winter months, parking is a necessity. We could not park on the road itself because it's 1 lane. We could not park in any other surrounding area to even walk to the cabin. We were refunded our money for the cabin stay yet were out 140.00 fuel, 7 hours driving (one way), and paying 110.00 for a room in Grangeville before heading home the next morning. I think the cabin itself would have been amazing to stay in, so we were really disappointed. No where in ANY literature did it mention the possibility of this happening.
