About Egin Lakes Campground/day Use Area

Located far from any ocean, the St. Anthony Sand Dunes appears as a rolling sea of sand on the eastern edge of Idaho’s volcanic Snake River Plain. These vast dunes are the largest in Idaho. They blanket an area approximately 20 miles long and 5 miles wide and range from 50 to 400 feet high. This 10,600-acre playground of shifting, white quartz sand is known for its unique beauty and exceptional space for off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts, hikers and equestrians. Picnicking, snowmobiling, wildlife viewing and camping opportunities are also available. The best time to visit is spring through fall. Summer temperatures cause sands to reach over 100 degrees. The area features Deadhorse Bowl, a popular OHV sand bowl one-mile in circumference and 400 feet deep, located in the western section of the dune complex. The Egin Lakes Campground located 8 miles to the west from St. Anthony, ID. The developed campground offers a potable water system, RV dump station and 48 improved camp units, including electrical service. There is also a day use and horse trailer parking area.

1) the camp host and his wife did an excellent job in terms of interfacing with us as well as just day-to-day while we were there for two weeks with questions and answers.

2) my one concern regarding the reservation system that I’ve now noted for the last three years that I have attended Egin Lakes, is that often the website shows that RV spots are reserved yet after 2-3 days they remain empty. I’ve noted this by comparing the site occupancy with what the website says. And there are too many sites that fall into this category, so it’s not as if the person reserving contacted and said they were gonna be late by some amount of time. On our last trip, we ended up having an extra trailer/family with us that we had to tightly fit into one of our sites. We talked to the camp host about a site that was right next to us and he said that he had contacted or tried to contact the reservation person. The person with that reservation did not contact the BLM to notify them in the 24 hour period that they were delayed. The camp host shared that me consulted the local BLM Manager and it was decided to grant some exception for the person to arrive on Friday, when their reservation was to begin on Monday. It turns out on top of granting this grace period, that person ended up showing up on Saturday, not Friday
My only request is that when you look at the published rules that the BLM has set down for reservations I’m asking the BLM to either follow them or don’t follow them. By granting these kind of exceptions it starts to get back to the same way that Egin Lake campground ran under a previous camp host named Sand Crab. The whole purpose of the reservation system was to get away from these exceptions and the buddy system to allow special circumstances. I would like the local BLM management to take all of this in spirit and just decide whether they’re going to make the rules black-and-white per the published guidelines or not.

Policies & Rules

Cancellation policy

  • Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
  • Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
  • Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
    • Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
    • One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
  • Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
  • Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
  • Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
