Only had a 1 night stay as we were passing through. We weren't disappointed. Typical well cared for well organized COE campground.

There was no adherence to the speed limit with trucks pulling campers or cars speeding through the campground which is very unsafe for walkers and kids on bikes. Also many campers kept lights on all night. Our neighbor brought a street lamp and the light was so bright in our windows it was difficult to sleep. He also cut through the back of my camper to his friend on the other side which invaded my privacy when he walked by my bedroom window. There are three campground hosts which are pretty much non existent through the day. We went to report finding a lost toddler and non of the campground hosts answered their doors before locating the child’s mother.
The campground is very beautiful and well kept and the nicest in Southern Illinois but it does have safety issues.

While not on the water, this site offers some views of the lake when the campground is not full. The parking pad is very level and easy to access. Depending upon the length of your camper, and where the doors are located, your door could come out on an area that the site gravel is not level with the pad. The USACE had placed some additional gravel along the edge of the parking pad, so we did not have any of the issues noted in other reviews. While the fire ring and picnic table are not near the parking pad, they are not terribly inaccessible. The sites in this area of the campground offer ample space between campers. Shopping for last minute foods or smores supplies can be found at Walmart a few minutes away in the town of Benton. About 30 minutes away in the town of Marion you will find a Camping World (if you have issues with your camper) and a multitude of restaurants and stores.

From I-57 take exit 77 and turn west on Route 154. Turn left onto Gun Creek Trail/Larry Foster Parkway, then right onto Golf Course Road. Continue 1/2 mi to park entrance.
Highway access
Gun Creek Campground is accessible from I-57 via exit 77, approximately 1 mile away. Illinois Route 154 runs directly in front of the campground, providing further access.
