The gun Creek campsite is always clean and well maintained. They did have a hiccup with the Watermain while we were there, but we were able to get it fixed as early as the next day. Great leadership with the park Rangers and army Corps of Engineers working together. Nothing but the best from this team.

Camp here frequently, only issue is the need for some road and path repairs, which have been neglected. Allowing tent campers on RV sites has at times been an issue.

I reserved the Gun Creek Shelter #10 for the last 10 years or so at the same date and time. They always have to come down and tell our handicapped gentleman to park someone else and they don't like the food truck supply van parked by the trailer they want him to park way up in the parking lot but .....They are pretty picky about the trash and we try hard to do the rules but this year I was told that I did not have a reservation but I did have for two days and she finally found it . You would think also that if you book and they knew it was having 50 people plus there they would mow and provide toilet paper in the restrooms. We were a disappointed this year that the grass was tall and we had to air dry.

Site 49 had amazing water view. No lake access. Persimmon trees provided shade. Concrete Picnic table with fire ring/grill combo. Mostly level with only minor pads needed. Good dump and water fill. 49 is at the end of the loop. Careful if driving the loop as the road is pitched and I can only assume a few larger rigs have bottomed out on the driver side. Quiet. Rangers patrolled often.
Bathhouse was clean but slightly dated which is not unusual for any state or federal campground. Nice hot water in the showers. There are local companies that deliver wood so call the location to get the info.
You pass through the golf course on the way in. There is a restaurant there also.

From I-57 take exit 77 and turn west on Route 154. Turn left onto Gun Creek Trail/Larry Foster Parkway, then right onto Golf Course Road. Continue 1/2 mi to park entrance.
Highway access
Gun Creek Campground is accessible from I-57 via exit 77, approximately 1 mile away. Illinois Route 154 runs directly in front of the campground, providing further access.
