We had a great experience at Dunewood. The campsites are spacious, clean and well maintained. The campground was quiet and nicely wooded. The bathroom and particularly the showers are clean and honest rank among the best we have had the good fortune to use. The camp host was friendly and offered great information. Highly recommend!!

We arrived the morning after the derecho blew through this area leaving downed trees and power lines. Facing a roadblock by local law enforcement, we had to drive around and enter the campground from the opposite direction. The rangers at the visitors center were posted outside the doors ready to hand out info but couldn’t tell us when power would be restored. All the restrooms were locked at the campground because of the lack of power. We decided to leave after one night because of the lack of restrooms to use. I had wished that an alert was sent out to campers who made reservations at the campground about the situation. My heart goes out to the residents of Gary who are still without power.

The employee at the front desk was very rude. She was explaining that there were power outages within the park and I understood the circumstances. As she was explaining she was very condescending, even told me “you must be desperate”. I demonstrated that I understood, and she continued to be negative. I actually had to walk away and have another person in my party check us in.

The heat couldn’t be helped, nor could the bugs. But the location so close to the train was extremely disrupting with whistles blowing all night long. Campsites were nicely maintained and personnel at check in were friendly and very helpful.

The washroom was great and campsite was quiet. Mosquitoes make our trip miserable.

People are in and out of the campground late afternoon to early morning, nearly each day. Most campers seem to be mostly overnight. That makes for a very quiet day, when remaining on my campsite. The evenings are basically quiet, too. It is a buggy place with all the marshes and bogs, which I expected, but Mather Loop has a "bog" right in the middle which makes it more so. I also stayed in the Douglas Loop, so to compare, it was less buggy, but busier with campers remaining for several nights or a week. The volunteers and rangers are all friendly and helpful, although the Douglas camp host looked at me like I was disturbing him when I approached the site for help with something. Once he actually LISTENED to what I was saying, he did offer good advice but I got the impression I was a bother. I'm a camp host in my state's parks and a national park volunteer ranger so that I have a problem with camp hosts who act put out when doing what they are getting a free site to do. The bathhouse and restrooms are clean and remain clean depending on who is using it. The person who diligently cleans the bathhouse does a fantastic job and not camper's housekeeper. It will remain clean if people respect that work. Only once was it unkept. . . because of campers. Several nights I heard what seemed like firecrackers late at night which are forbidden. It is a noisy place, close to the road and railroad. That didn't bother me, but it isn't transportation quiet. I staying on several sites, piecing my 14 day stay and some sites are better than others. Some are shady and some are sunny. All provide some level of shade, but if you need to charge with a solar panel, some sites don't provide that. I just took my small station to the bathhouse and read while it charged each morning. There are wild turkeys, with chicks, walking through the campground each evening. Too cute.
