Camp site was okay but we got a site that was flooded and they didn’t bother to address the situation. Bathrooms need to be cleaner.

This campsite is kind of what you would expect for the area. That meaning - this campsite is a great option for people who are just starting to explore going camping - the campsite was clean and I felt safe, the environment was nice, bathrooms are far nicer than most camp bathrooms. However, you will hear the train and the highway (faintly, not like you're right next to it), and you're not going to wake up to some stupendous view because you're surrounded by forest, because of that it will get darker earlier and lighter later. Despite the trees, you are under no illusion that you are near a major city. If I find myself visiting Sand Dunes again, I'll gladly stay at this campsite, but out of all NPS campsite I've stayed at, its ok.

We have been coming to Dunewood campground for many years. Camping with our children when they were younger and we had just a tent. We often chose the walk-in sites. Now that our children are grown we've "graduated" to a small camper/trailer and still enjoy the more secluded sites and that Dunewood is "no-frills" . We enjoy the peaceful, quiet atmosphere and not all the "extra" activities and distractions of being in the wooded outdoors. While it rained the majority of our time, including a night of tornado warnings, which the rangers were good to come and suggest we take shelter in the restrooms.... we still just enjoyed being so close, yet far enough away from home to be able to relax and spend some quiet time to ourselves.

We had the BEST time camping here! We had visited Indiana Dunes NP many times before for hiking and day trips from Chicago, but this was our first time staying at Dunewood Campground (walk in sites), and we are already talking about coming back.
The campsites felt incredibly private and beautifully tucked into the woods with great tree cover. It honestly felt at least 10 degrees cooler in our campsite than out on the trails each day, which made a huge difference in June. The sites were very well maintained and groomed, with a fantastic fire pit, solid adjustable metal grate for cooking, and a great lantern pole setup.
The location was perfect with easy access to multiple trails and beaches, and the wildlife was amazing. We saw turtles, wild turkeys, deer, lizards, and so many birds throughout our stay. The park rangers were also incredibly friendly and went above and beyond to be welcoming and helpful.
We brought our three dogs and had such a great experience. The entire park felt extremely dog friendly—from the campground to the trails and even the beaches.
Only recommendation for future campers: if visiting in June, definitely use flea and tick prevention for dogs and bring mosquito repellent. The ticks were intense during our visit.
Overall, an amazing experience and one of our favorite "closer to home" camping trips with the 4 legged family. We can't wait to come back!

Located within Indiana Dunes National Park, the campground is heavily wooded with approximately 66 sites. Although there is generous space between each site, many can be tight and not quite level. The roads and sites throughout the campground are asphalt, and the entire campground is very well maintained. There is no electricity, but water and a dump station is available. As stated, the campground is heavily wooded, so there might be issues with using Starlink or charging solar panels.

This is a lovely shady campground! Close to the beach and the dark sky parking lot, and to town.
