About Mammoth Cave Campground

Mammoth Cave Campground offers campers a prime location to explore both the depths and surface treasures of Mammoth Cave National Park.  Clicking on the site link will provide more details about the site's conditions. Be sure to check the 'Need to Know' section for each site to gather additional information on specific conditions.  All wheels must remain on the pavement within the campground, as varying conditions can cause muddy ruts and erosion. Mammoth Cave is an underground passageway with over 400 miles of naturally sculpted limestone and sandstone, making it the longest recorded cave system in the world. The grand-scale chambers and winding passageways were the inspiration for the park’s name.  The campground also serves as an entry point to 14 miles of hiking and biking trails, and is just a five-minute walk to the Visitor Center, where cave tours begin

Really nice campground. It was well kept, quiet, close to many activities in the park- hiking, tours, bike trail etc. We really loved going to the ranger talks in the evening.

It's a beautiful area. Nice clean campground. Camp sites are spacious and well equipped. Showers are pay by quarter and for a 10 min shower it's about $8. Laundry on site. Also pay by quarter. Campground has a store you can go to. This is not a campground where they have bear bins. Book tours well in advance. There's no cell service to book when you get there and they all sell out in advance or the few left in the morning sell out immediately.

We actually couldn't camp there. A huge storm came in as soon as I started setting up the tent. My 10y son who was sent to the camp bulletin board came back with the weather forecast there that the storm wouldn't stop until 2am. We opted to leave the campground and found a hotel room just a few miles east in town. The campground seems be at a perfect spot, an ideal setting top on the list compared to all other two dozen national park campgrounds we have been to. I personally would love to camp in rain and enjoy everything this experience would provide. But I was alone with two young children....Anyways, we returned to the park second day...Love Smokies!

Beautiful park, campsite worked perfectly for our SUV and small kayak trailer. Location of campgrounds is perfect for accessing the main visitors center and centrally located spots. Facilities were generally pretty clean and well maintained. Every ranger we encountered on or off camp was professional and friendly. Such amazing geography all around this area of the country, green river is beautiful, hiking is great and the NPS tours of the caves are always the highlight and the rangers who lead these are real professionals.

The public is likely the biggest issue in parks these days, but for how busy this park is it really could have been worse. We cleaned up lots of trash left on our site upon arrival, including some things that shouldn't have been in the firepit. During the day someone stole wood and kindling from our site, I guess they needed it more that us.

This was our second time to Mammoth Cave park, first at the campground and we look forward to coming back to continue exploring this massive and truly amazing place.
