Mammoth Cave Campground

Clean campground and bathrooms. Grounds were well taken care of. We will be back for sure.

The spot we were in was quite uneven and on an odd small loop. So many campfires that you breathed smoke through the night.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mammoth Caves NP! All park rangers and workers were knowledgeable and professional. The campground, however, is due for a major upgrade although we were lucky enough to stay in one of only two full service campsites. The tours were great and reasonably priced although we found it ironic that the “Accessible” tour was actually unaccessible to anyone that did not have their own vehicle. We did not as we arrived in a large motorhome.

Campsite was great, cave tour excellent. Coin showers a pain to use but otherwise OK

The campground was quiet, tidy and beautiful, the restrooms were spotless. Solid cement picnic table and a nice fire ring with grill option. We visited in late October and the foliage was in full swing. Had a great stay! Truly the cleanest restrooms I have seen in a campground!

We did two tours - The Frozen Niagara and The Grand Historical Tour. I would recommend these two in combination as they show very different parts of the cave. The Frozen Niagara is in an active portion of the cave, meaning that there is a lot of water and it is still forming. It is very decorated with stalactites, stalagmites, and draperies. The majority of Mammoth Cave does not look like this.

The Grand Historical tour was long - 4 hours - but we entered the cave via the Historical Entrance and learned a lot about the history of the cave. We also saw a lot of portions that are covered on smaller, more narrowly focused tours.

Site didn't have electricity. Was not informed when speaking with RECREATION.gov agent. Asked to speak with agent after spending 30 minutes trying to use RECREATION.gov website to make reservation. At Park while taking with campground host I was stung by a wasp. With more wasps flying around I was attempting to talk with campground host (who was inside) while I was standing outside. Host did not offer shelter from wasps. I abandoned conversation. It was late afternoon. Host said his shift was over in 10 minutes. Nearest possible alternative campsites were 30 miles away.

Site was clean a d we actually were allowed to change site when we arrived to a first come site.

We tent camped in site C-079 for 3 nights. The location was mostly level and accommodated 2 medium tents. There are a lot of trees throughout the campground and the Fall colors were beautiful. It was a short distance to the bathrooms which was appreciated by those in our group that needed to go in the middle of the night. The bathrooms were clean and well lit. There was not a large number of campers in the "C" loop which made our visit enjoyable and quiet. The area between the fire pit, picnic table and tent location had a large number of surface tree roots, considering the geology of the area this was to be expected, but it led to a significant tripping hazard especially at night. We arrived late in the day our first night and the camp store closed early, so we had to drive back towards town to purchase local firewood which turned out to be much better than the firewood alternative (pressed sawdust blocks) that the camp store had to offer. The most negative experience, especially for the children and young adults in our group, was the constant harassments by a large number of Eastern Yellow Jackets. They were not aggressive (probably due to the time of year), but from dawn to dusk they were in everything, food, drinks, tents, eyes, ears, noses, hair and cloths. Minus the Yellow Jackets, our stay was great.

Overall experience was great, but the showers are terrible. Whoever the company is that is contracted with the park service is needs to upgrade the facilities. The cost is to high and the product is very poor.
