The shelter it self had a "step" to get into it that was very dangerous. It was uneven, extremely high, and not attached to the shelter at all. That needs to be fixed.
The pit toilet was a disgrace. I've used good pit toilets and know they can be cleaned and maintained. That toilet was nightmare fuel.

The shelter was clean and had more than enough room for our family of five. The shelter 1 was far enough from shelter 2 that we could not see our "neighbors" and could only hear them occasionally, so we felt like we were quite secluded. The put toilet was about what could be expected. Overall, we had a nice outing for the family's first backpacking experience.

I’ve stayed in these shelters twice now. It’s a fairly easy 3ish mile hike in and out, great for testing out new gear. The sites themselves are great and fairly secluded. There is a stream nearby if you need to filter water.

Catocin Mountain Park was very clean and beautiful. NPS staff were friendly and informative. I had a great time camping in the secluded lean-to. The trails are in great shape.. The park in general is fantastic. From backcountry primitive camping to rock outcrops sporting expansive views. Highly recommend Catocin. Great place for whole family to enjoy beginners to experienced

Relatively easy hike out to the shelters though the labelling is a bit odd as you hit a sign pointing to "shelters" (which only leads to one) before you get to the main sign directing you to the shelters by number (in between both shelters on the main trail) so look for that before wandering down a side trail to a shelter. (Note: we hiked out in the dark so this likely made it more difficult to find) Overall, just a really nice experience. You can't see the other shelter from your camp and it's an easy fun backpacking trip.

Directions to the trailhead parking at Camp Round Meadow: From Thurmont MD, take Route 77 west 5 miles (8 km) to Foxville Road. Turn right and follow signs to Camp Round Meadow parking area.
You cannot drive to the shelters. The hike is a minimum of 3 miles (4.8 km).

Hikers: protect park resources by using the trail system when accessing the shelters or other park features. Obtain trail maps at the park Visitor Center or download them from the Catoctin Mountain Park Hiking web page. Hilly terrain and the forest canopy can prevent satellite signals from reaching your unit increasing the importance of a back-up strategy.
The campground is accessible via Route 77, which connects to Thurmont, MD. No other major roads are mentioned within a meaningful distance.

Policies & Rules
Cancellation policy
- Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
- Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
- Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
- Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
- Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
- Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
- Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
