The Ironman Michigan triathlon will be taking place Sunday, September 20, 2026.The bike course takes place on M-22 and will have significant impact on local traffic. M-22 will be closed from 8:30 am to approximately 2 pm between the City of Frankfort and Esch Road.To avoid road closures, arriving campers should not arrive before the scheduled check-in time of 2 pm.To avoid road closures, departing campers should exit by 8:30 am via Deadstream Road, Platte Road, or M-22 northbound. Southbound M-22 will be closed.

About Platte River Campground

Platte River Campground is located in the southern district of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, on the lower peninsula of Michigan. This year-round facility is one of the most popular campgrounds in the park. It is within walking distance of the Platte River and a short walk or drive away from the Lake Michigan shore. Hikers can access many of the area's day use and backpacking trails just north of the campground. Summer temperatures range from the upper 70s to 90 degrees F (25° to 32° C) during the day, and from the 50s to 70 degrees F (10° to 25° C) at night.  Winters are cold, with daytime highs from 20° to 30° F (-7° to -1° C) and lows in the 10s and 20s F (-12 to -7° C). Snow is usually on the ground from late November through March.

I was on a roadtrip without reservations and was able to get site 101. Even though it was at the beginning of the loop, it was very quiet and nice and shady. The site was paved and level. Everything seemed to be fairly new and very well maintained. I would come here again.

One of the best campgrounds in Michigan. Loop 4 with no electric is my fave, not a bad site anywhere.

Overall our visit was great. Area was beautiful and access to the river was exceptional.
Short drive to sleeping bear dunes area as well.
Downsides were that so many electric sites were booked and not being used, after we tried our hardest to get them at time of booking with no luck. And then a bunch of electric sites were book by tent campers and even though it’s obviously first come first serve, I feel as though a system should be set in place for the people who actually use the sites for their campers or RVs.
We had to book three primitive sites for three families in 30 foot travel trailers, all of which were on a very steep grade.
One of our sites (406) the fire pit was in a back corner of the gravel area and couldn’t be used for a group of people to sit around. I don’t understand some of the placements for things.
Beware of mosquitoes as well. They are plentiful and ravenous. Little to no cell service.

  • Entrance Fees - Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore charges a variety of entrance fees, depending on how a visitor arrives at the park. All visitors must have an entrance pass (separate from camping fees). The park also honors Federal Recreational Lands America the Beautiful (e.g., Resident Annual, Non-Resident Annual, Senior, Access, Military, 4th Grade, Golden Age). For more information visit the park's Fees & Passes web page. The Michigan Recreation Passport is not valid for entry at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which is a federally managed site.
