The Ironman Michigan triathlon will be taking place Sunday, September 20, 2026.The bike course takes place on M-22 and will have significant impact on local traffic. M-22 will be closed from 8:30 am to approximately 2 pm between the City of Frankfort and Esch Road.To avoid road closures, arriving campers should not arrive before the scheduled check-in time of 2 pm.To avoid road closures, departing campers should exit by 8:30 am via Deadstream Road, Platte Road, or M-22 northbound. Southbound M-22 will be closed.

About Platte River Campground

Platte River Campground is located in the southern district of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, on the lower peninsula of Michigan. This year-round facility is one of the most popular campgrounds in the park. It is within walking distance of the Platte River and a short walk or drive away from the Lake Michigan shore. Hikers can access many of the area's day use and backpacking trails just north of the campground. Summer temperatures range from the upper 70s to 90 degrees F (25° to 32° C) during the day, and from the 50s to 70 degrees F (10° to 25° C) at night.  Winters are cold, with daytime highs from 20° to 30° F (-7° to -1° C) and lows in the 10s and 20s F (-12 to -7° C). Snow is usually on the ground from late November through March.

I go to Platte River Campground every summer. I love this park! Great location for hiking, clean bathrooms, large, private feeling sites. Having the senior pass, I get a great discount on camping too!

Great campground, very well maintained. Sites were level and well cleared for those that needed to back campers in. Fire pits were located a safe distance from your camper. Showers and bathrooms were clean and well maintained.
Parks check-in was easy and staff were excellent at providing us with lots of information. Will definitely return!

Stayed in loop 4 in a tent. The spots were closer together than I imagined they would be but that would be great if traveling with other families. Bathrooms were nicer than expected! We will be back again!

Mosquitoes were worse than normal. Not necessarily something the park could do anything about. But our site was right next to the bathrooms and people kept walking through our site thinking it was a normal pathway.

It was our first time camping at the Platte River. The campground is very dense, but the lots are great. The staff and volunteers are very friendly, and busy at work. There are plenty of restrooms. There’s garbage and recycling everywhere. I enjoy hiking and the beach, but the mosquitoes and black flies made it difficult to enjoy the outside. The beach is about 2 miles by bike.

All visitors must have an entrance pass (separate from camping fees). The park also honors Federal Recreational Lands America the Beautiful (e.g., Resident Annual, Non-Resident Annual, Senior, Access, Military, 4th Grade, Golden Age). For more information visit the park's Fees & Passes web page. The Michigan Recreation Passport is not valid for entry at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which is a federally managed site.
  • 6. Quiet hours are 10 pm - 6 am.
