The Ironman Michigan triathlon will be taking place Sunday, September 20, 2026.The bike course takes place on M-22 and will have significant impact on local traffic. M-22 will be closed from 8:30 am to approximately 2 pm between the City of Frankfort and Esch Road.To avoid road closures, arriving campers should not arrive before the scheduled check-in time of 2 pm.To avoid road closures, departing campers should exit by 8:30 am via Deadstream Road, Platte Road, or M-22 northbound. Southbound M-22 will be closed.

About Platte River Campground

Platte River Campground is located in the southern district of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, on the lower peninsula of Michigan. This year-round facility is one of the most popular campgrounds in the park. It is within walking distance of the Platte River and a short walk or drive away from the Lake Michigan shore. Hikers can access many of the area's day use and backpacking trails just north of the campground. Summer temperatures range from the upper 70s to 90 degrees F (25° to 32° C) during the day, and from the 50s to 70 degrees F (10° to 25° C) at night.  Winters are cold, with daytime highs from 20° to 30° F (-7° to -1° C) and lows in the 10s and 20s F (-12 to -7° C). Snow is usually on the ground from late November through March.

The campground was immaculate. Sites were large and very well maintained. Bathrooms & showers were clean and inviting. One does not expect such nice amenities in a NPS campground. We are recommending Platte River to friends & family.

I enjoyed the whole area. The campground itself had more mosquitos than I had ever seen. I should have brought a screen room for cooking. Since I did not have one, I went to Frankfort for dinner and to a picnic area near the water for morning coffee and breakfast where the breeze kept the bugs to a reasonable level,

When we got home we looked at this webpage and it discussed the huge amount of mosquitoes. We encountered them and more. It would have been nice if we got that notice BEFORE we went instead of after we got home! It was miserable, but we did hear owls 3 different times in 2 nights. As usual, we very much enjoyed the campground. It was very quiet and clean. We did not appreciate the humidity and downpour, but I guess that is part of camping (and not the park's fault.

  • Entrance Fees - Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore charges a variety of entrance fees, depending on how a visitor arrives at the park. All visitors must have an entrance pass (separate from camping fees). The park also honors Federal Recreational Lands America the Beautiful (e.g., Resident Annual, Non-Resident Annual, Senior, Access, Military, 4th Grade, Golden Age). For more information visit the park's Fees & Passes web page. The Michigan Recreation Passport is not valid for entry at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which is a federally managed site.
  • 6. Quiet hours are 10 pm - 6 am.
