The Ironman Michigan triathlon will be taking place Sunday, September 20, 2026.The bike course takes place on M-22 and will have significant impact on local traffic. M-22 will be closed from 8:30 am to approximately 2 pm between the City of Frankfort and Esch Road.To avoid road closures, arriving campers should not arrive before the scheduled check-in time of 2 pm.To avoid road closures, departing campers should exit by 8:30 am via Deadstream Road, Platte Road, or M-22 northbound. Southbound M-22 will be closed.

About Platte River Campground

Platte River Campground is located in the southern district of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, on the lower peninsula of Michigan. This year-round facility is one of the most popular campgrounds in the park. It is within walking distance of the Platte River and a short walk or drive away from the Lake Michigan shore. Hikers can access many of the area's day use and backpacking trails just north of the campground. Summer temperatures range from the upper 70s to 90 degrees F (25° to 32° C) during the day, and from the 50s to 70 degrees F (10° to 25° C) at night.  Winters are cold, with daytime highs from 20° to 30° F (-7° to -1° C) and lows in the 10s and 20s F (-12 to -7° C). Snow is usually on the ground from late November through March.

I love this park and where it is. This trip had a lot of mosquitoes which was unusual. It was hard to sit out by a fire because there were so many mosquitoes.

Most beautiful place in MI. So many things to explore and do within a short radius. Platte Piont is the best place to see a sunset as well. Wonderful campground except for the mosquitoes in May.

Parking is somewhat limited for the walk-in sites so would recommend getting to the site somewhat early. Booking system and check-in at the campsite worked well.

This campground is fantastic, but come prepared for mosquitos! The staff and facilities are excellent. Easy access to the beach and great trails around. Can’t say enough nice things. Unfortunately, we seem to have visited during peak mosquito season and had never seen so many mosquitos in one place. Swarms and clouds of them… heavy-duty bugspray did nothing to detur them. If you visit, come prepared with nets & full coverings — we ended up hiding out in the tent most of the time, and still came away with 50 to 100 bites each. If you’re prepared, you’ll have a wonderful time!!!

Staff were very friendly, bathrooms were clean and well stocked, only 2 louder groups on our loop but not anything unreasonable. Mosquitoes were really bad in the campground and on the beach though.

Bathrooms were clean. Always enjoy talking to our host Bruce and his wife.
I wish they made parking spots at sites longer. And add electric to loop 4 campsites. Always we enjoy camping and kayaking here

All visitors must have an entrance pass (separate from camping fees). The park also honors Federal Recreational Lands America the Beautiful (e.g., Resident Annual, Non-Resident Annual, Senior, Access, Military, 4th Grade, Golden Age). For more information visit the park's Fees & Passes web page. The Michigan Recreation Passport is not valid for entry at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which is a federally managed site.
