The Ironman Michigan triathlon will be taking place Sunday, September 20, 2026.The bike course takes place on M-22 and will have significant impact on local traffic. M-22 will be closed from 8:30 am to approximately 2 pm between the City of Frankfort and Esch Road.To avoid road closures, arriving campers should not arrive before the scheduled check-in time of 2 pm.To avoid road closures, departing campers should exit by 8:30 am via Deadstream Road, Platte Road, or M-22 northbound. Southbound M-22 will be closed.

About Platte River Campground

Platte River Campground is located in the southern district of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, on the lower peninsula of Michigan. This year-round facility is one of the most popular campgrounds in the park. It is within walking distance of the Platte River and a short walk or drive away from the Lake Michigan shore. Hikers can access many of the area's day use and backpacking trails just north of the campground. Summer temperatures range from the upper 70s to 90 degrees F (25° to 32° C) during the day, and from the 50s to 70 degrees F (10° to 25° C) at night.  Winters are cold, with daytime highs from 20° to 30° F (-7° to -1° C) and lows in the 10s and 20s F (-12 to -7° C). Snow is usually on the ground from late November through March.

Platt River Campground is amazing. We have made this an annual trip and camped with 3 other families. It's quiet, but family friendly, the river is great for floating, swimming exploring and the showers and bathrooms are a great convenience.

This is our 4th trip up to Platte River and we love it more and more each time we go! Our favorite time to visit is after school starts, Sept-Oct time. (Less people). Hiking to the beach is a must and kayaking down the river is a blast! Thank you again for a wonderful trip!

Platte River campground is wonderful, beautiful, sublime! The walk in sites are enormous and give you lots of privacy. The regular sites are nice too, you're not crammed in like some campgrounds.
It's less than a mile walk to a beautiful Lake Michigan Beach.
The Showers and Bathrooms are always clean and the staff are friendly and informative.

Best campground ever! I highly recommend the walk in sites. The regular campground is a bit crowded. Bathrooms are clean and all the staff is friendly. Best place to camp in the Midwest!

  • Entrance Fees - Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore charges a variety of entrance fees, depending on how a visitor arrives at the park. All visitors must have an entrance pass (separate from camping fees). The park also honors Federal Recreational Lands America the Beautiful (e.g., Resident Annual, Non-Resident Annual, Senior, Access, Military, 4th Grade, Golden Age). For more information visit the park's Fees & Passes web page. The Michigan Recreation Passport is not valid for entry at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which is a federally managed site.
