Platte River Campground was one of the highlights of my Michigan adventure. From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed by an incredibly kind, knowledgeable staff. A special thank you to Gretchen and her husband, who made me feel right at home with their warmth and helpfulness.
The campground is beautifully maintained. The bathrooms and shower facilities were spotless, there was a convenient dishwashing station, plenty of potable water, ranger-led nature programs, and wonderful hiking trails right from the campground.
I stayed in Loop 4 at walk-in Site A004. It was wonderfully quiet, private, and surrounded by trees—exactly what I was looking for. I would only caution that you’ll need to carry your gear from the parking area, so campers with lots of equipment may prefer one of the drive-in sites in the other loops.
The location couldn’t be better. It’s just minutes from Sleeping Bear Dunes, scenic drives, cherry orchards, vineyards, and wine tasting. I also loved visiting Point Betsie Lighthouse, rock hounding along the Lake Michigan shoreline, and exploring peaceful forest trails.
Every evening I returned to a campsite where all I heard were the sounds of nature. If you’re looking for a clean, peaceful campground with exceptional staff and easy access to everything Sleeping Bear Dunes has to offer, I highly recommend Platte River Campground. I can’t wait to return.

We had a wonderful stay at the walk-in campground at Platte River. The campground was peaceful, beautiful, and easy to get to. The walk to Lake Michigan was absolutely gorgeous, and we loved that the beach wasn’t crowded. It was the perfect spot to relax, enjoy nature, and get away from the busyness of everyday life. We would definitely stay here again!

The reservation system is flaud and annoying but the park itself is gorgeous and fun from floating down the Platte River watching people struggle to swim across loon lake. Watching people on their hands and knees climbing pier stocking. Or just climbing the sand dunes. Plan accordingly you could be waiting in lines or walking a 1/4 mile just to get the river mouth. There’s lots of beaches to go too
