The Ironman Michigan triathlon will be taking place Sunday, September 20, 2026.The bike course takes place on M-22 and will have significant impact on local traffic. M-22 will be closed from 8:30 am to approximately 2 pm between the City of Frankfort and Esch Road.To avoid road closures, arriving campers should not arrive before the scheduled check-in time of 2 pm.To avoid road closures, departing campers should exit by 8:30 am via Deadstream Road, Platte Road, or M-22 northbound. Southbound M-22 will be closed.

About Platte River Campground

Platte River Campground is located in the southern district of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, on the lower peninsula of Michigan. This year-round facility is one of the most popular campgrounds in the park. It is within walking distance of the Platte River and a short walk or drive away from the Lake Michigan shore. Hikers can access many of the area's day use and backpacking trails just north of the campground. Summer temperatures range from the upper 70s to 90 degrees F (25° to 32° C) during the day, and from the 50s to 70 degrees F (10° to 25° C) at night.  Winters are cold, with daytime highs from 20° to 30° F (-7° to -1° C) and lows in the 10s and 20s F (-12 to -7° C). Snow is usually on the ground from late November through March.

Platte River is a beautiful campground and we will definitely go back. We visited at the end of May and the mosquitos were so thick it was almost unbearable. We definitely needed a thermacell unit and deet. The restroom facilities were well-kept and had utility sinks for doing dishes, which came in handy. Site was level with a separate pad for the picnic table that was up a hill. I would recommend looking for an ADA site if unlevel ground is a challenge. Overall, beautiful!

The electric power was cut off to charge my vehicle around 8 pm and was not able to get a hold of anyone until around 10 am. I requested to get a refund and they denied it.

We love how close the camping ground is to Sleeping Bear Dunes. Campsites are well kept and so are bathrooms and shower facilities.

This campground is always beautiful every time we visit. Showers and bathrooms are always clean and sites are very spacious and well kept. Their crew is always out making sure things are taken care of on the grounds. Previous reviews had complained about mosquitoes being unbearable but maybe we just lucked out due to cooler weather? I personally didn’t think they were all that bad, just be sure to bring some bug spray and you should be fine.

We love this campground for many reasons: nice big lot size, bathrooms are always clean, showers are hot and have great water pressure. We love the area because you are within a 15 - 45 minute drive to great breweries (Lake Ann is our favorite), wineries, golf courses. We also love to take our boat out on Crystal Lake and visit the town of Frankfort.

  • Entrance Fees - Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore charges a variety of entrance fees, depending on how a visitor arrives at the park. All visitors must have an entrance pass (separate from camping fees). The park also honors Federal Recreational Lands America the Beautiful (e.g., Resident Annual, Non-Resident Annual, Senior, Access, Military, 4th Grade, Golden Age). For more information visit the park's Fees & Passes web page. The Michigan Recreation Passport is not valid for entry at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which is a federally managed site.
