The Ironman Michigan triathlon will be taking place Sunday, September 20, 2026.The bike course takes place on M-22 and will have significant impact on local traffic. M-22 will be closed from 8:30 am to approximately 2 pm between the City of Frankfort and Esch Road.To avoid road closures, arriving campers should not arrive before the scheduled check-in time of 2 pm.To avoid road closures, departing campers should exit by 8:30 am via Deadstream Road, Platte Road, or M-22 northbound. Southbound M-22 will be closed.

About Platte River Campground

Platte River Campground is located in the southern district of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, on the lower peninsula of Michigan. This year-round facility is one of the most popular campgrounds in the park. It is within walking distance of the Platte River and a short walk or drive away from the Lake Michigan shore. Hikers can access many of the area's day use and backpacking trails just north of the campground. Summer temperatures range from the upper 70s to 90 degrees F (25° to 32° C) during the day, and from the 50s to 70 degrees F (10° to 25° C) at night.  Winters are cold, with daytime highs from 20° to 30° F (-7° to -1° C) and lows in the 10s and 20s F (-12 to -7° C). Snow is usually on the ground from late November through March.

A003 is definitely a little bit of a walk! I wouldn’t suggest it if you bring a lot of stuff. But it is perfect, beautiful and quiet. The ground is level for the tent and fire pit. We really enjoyed this campsite.

We loved our time at the Sleeping Bear Dunes national park and Platte River campground. The host was friendly and helpful. The campsites were large and private. Loop 1 was more private and better than loop 4 but both were nice.

Clean showers. Picnic park includes a ramp for launching Kayaks. You can also tube it to the beach from a launch site further down the river.

We stayed at the park only one night because our reason for going there was to kayak down the river to the mouth at Lake Michigan. We reserved our site too late to secure a preferred site with electricity, but the bathroom facilities were new and modern even in that loop! It’s a beautiful area of Michigan to explore over a longer stay.

Very nice campground and staff. The restrooms are clean and so are the showers. Even the price is right!

If I had to change something maybe a program to teach about the area on a Friday or Saturday night would be appreciated.

Otherwise we will be back over and over.

All visitors must have an entrance pass (separate from camping fees). The park also honors Federal Recreational Lands America the Beautiful (e.g., Resident Annual, Non-Resident Annual, Senior, Access, Military, 4th Grade, Golden Age). For more information visit the park's Fees & Passes web page. The Michigan Recreation Passport is not valid for entry at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which is a federally managed site.
