The Ironman Michigan triathlon will be taking place Sunday, September 20, 2026.The bike course takes place on M-22 and will have significant impact on local traffic. M-22 will be closed from 8:30 am to approximately 2 pm between the City of Frankfort and Esch Road.To avoid road closures, arriving campers should not arrive before the scheduled check-in time of 2 pm.To avoid road closures, departing campers should exit by 8:30 am via Deadstream Road, Platte Road, or M-22 northbound. Southbound M-22 will be closed.

About Platte River Campground

Platte River Campground is located in the southern district of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, on the lower peninsula of Michigan. This year-round facility is one of the most popular campgrounds in the park. It is within walking distance of the Platte River and a short walk or drive away from the Lake Michigan shore. Hikers can access many of the area's day use and backpacking trails just north of the campground. Summer temperatures range from the upper 70s to 90 degrees F (25° to 32° C) during the day, and from the 50s to 70 degrees F (10° to 25° C) at night.  Winters are cold, with daytime highs from 20° to 30° F (-7° to -1° C) and lows in the 10s and 20s F (-12 to -7° C). Snow is usually on the ground from late November through March.

Love the non-electric loop. Quiet and shady. The park is peaceful and we relaxed after a busy 4th of July weekend in the UP. The proximity to the river and the lake is perfect here at Platte River.

This is the campground that sets the standards by which all others should be judged. Large, heavily wooded, private sites. Bathrooms and showers are unbelievably moderns and clean. Not a single negative other than the fact we couldn’t stay more nights!

We had a great experience at this campground, in the non-electric Loop 4. It was about as quiet as you can get for a full campground in the summer. Sites felt more private since they weren't right on the road, and the bathrooms/showers were clean with great water pressure and hot water. The tent pad was level.

Platte Beach was perfect for kids, and a short drive away, and we also took advantage of a few hiking trails in the area. The daily ranger programs at the campground amphitheater were informative, and a nice way to wind down the day.

The park also honors Federal Recreational Lands America the Beautiful (e.g., Resident Annual, Non-Resident Annual, Senior, Access, Military, 4th Grade, Golden Age). For more information visit the park's Fees & Passes web page. The Michigan Recreation Passport is not valid for entry at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which is a federally managed site.
