Black River Harbor Campground

Take the Rainbow Falls walk through old growth forests. A true gem.

Spacious sites in heavily wooded area. Quiet enough to hear the waves of Lake Superior rolling into shore.

If I could rate simply for beauty and cleanliness, I would give it 5 stars. There are several reasons for the 1 star rating. Chainsaws are apparently permitted. The group next to us used one, as well as the camp host across the street. The group next to us also felled a small standing, LIVE tree while the camp host did nothing to deter. The use of generators is also apparently permitted as one was left running nearby for the better part of the day/evening.

If you are looking for a quiet get-away, I would not recommend. If you don't mind the noise, it is a beautiful location.

I traveled for hours to this location specifically because there was no mention of generators or the like permitted on the website. I was also very sad to see live trees taken for no reason other than sheer ignorance. I have been here in the past, later in the year; it was quiet and serene. The influx of wanna-be outdoorsy people ruined this birthday trip for me and we actually left early.

Please be considerate to your neighbors and especially the surrounding nature areas!

Loved it! Nice campground, bathroom clean and fairly close. Love the fire pit with grid attached!!

There is NO water at the BR campground (nor at the Pavilion Park). Spigots have not been turned on. A DNR person told me there will be no water for the rest of the season.

The campground itself is nice. Good sites, great waterfalls nearby, but the bugs can make it impossible to stay here. There were swarms of biting flies that land and attack by the dozens. When a car drove by, you could actually see a cloud of flies in it's wake. We planned to stay for 5 days, but quickly packed up and moved elsewhere.

Black River Harbor Campground. We started coming here a couple years ago after Saxon Harbor in WI was demolished in a storm. Site was fantastic, the weather great, but the stable flies unbelievably bad. I knew it would be a gamble being there in June because that's their prime hatching season, but we tried anyway. There was a south wind for each of the three days we were there and they were biting constantly the times we were at the beach. Wind coming off the lake (from the north) pushes the stable flies off the beach but if it comes from the south they can be murderous. For those non-beach days check out the waterfalls, the flies tend not to be bad there.
Verizon phone service was non-existent, but hey you're on vacation. Just make your calls before going north from Ironwood or Bessemer.

We enjoyed this campground in September because of its isolation and how quiet it was. But be prepared we arrived during the week and there was one other camper in the entire campground. No visible ranger. Looked like many of the sites were reserved for the weekend So the atmosphere probably changes.There is no power and we came with full fresh water. On the positive it’s quiet and scenery was great. We had a site right next to Lake superior which was wonderful. We could walk out to a point overlooking the lake with a bench to sit on. It is also very near excellent hiking on the North country Trail with fabulous waterfalls.

I camped late in the season and the park was lightly attended, which was nice for a drive in campsite. Even though my site was not located on the shore line I could easily hear the the rhythm of waves crashing in from Lake Superior. The trees were well into their seasonal colors. Cleanest pit toilet I have ever been in. The park's location is convenient to multiple hiking destinations.
