I DO NOT recommend this campground. The sites are VERY small and the campground seemed to be forgotten about-very dingy! We didn’t stay but found a wonderful spot at Bobcat Lake. Remote and the sites were beautiful.

We love Black River Harbor Campground. Really nice sites, good size with lovely vegetation borders. All have fire rings and nice picnic tables. It is remote with limited services; no connectivity. but near stunning waterfalls and good hiking. No hook-ups; clean vault toilets. Presumably the water issues have been solved and they expect to turn it on in 2022...we hope so. We understand that the harbor area has been rebuilt and the 15 mile road to/from town is nicely paved. One BIG PROBLEM: the campground road is in very bad need of repair...it is an obstacle course and almost impossible to avoid dropping into the many potholes. They need to repave it! (We also hope they reinstall a bridge at the end of the campground trail to the harbor.)

We came for a night of tent camping on the way to Maryland from Minnesota and arrived in time to enjoy an evening at the campground. We hadn’t expected there to be no water so we didn’t come with any. Fortunately another couple shared a gallon with us. The bathrooms were well kept and clean. The location is great but adding a well would do wonders.

We always love our visit to Black River Harbor, and the addition of Black top was nice. However, it was disappointing that the work although just complete 2 weeks ago was poorly done, the base applied was not properly compacted which left the shoulders soft and road already with sinking low spots. So enough of the poor construction paid for by tax payer money. We were there from Thursday through Sunday, the pit toilets were without toilet paper and not cleaned, in fact we did not see any park staff until just as we were leaving on Sunday at which time they did mow and clean the bathrooms. There is no working water potable or non-potable. The bathrooms and water we were prepared for and easily dealt with. The most disappointing is the horrible condition of the trails along the falls, the wooden walks are in disrepair, rotten sections blocked off, stairs with large chunks of rebar sticking up. I have never seen National Forest trails is such disrepair. If you like to hike be extremely careful, loose, and rotten trail boards are the norm. It certainly looks like the Ottawa National forest management has just checked out on the Black River Recreation area. Sad.

From Ironwood Mi., travel east on US 2 to Powderhorn Road, turn left onto Powderhorn Road and travel approximately 3 miles to CR 513, turn left onto CR 513 and travel approximately 11 miles to the Black River Harbor Recreation Area.
The campground is accessible via US Highway 2, which is approximately 3 miles from Powderhorn Road and about 11 miles from CR 513.
Elevation: 182 feet
19 mi drive to downtown Ironwood (about 29 min)
Policies & Rules
General
- Camping in a developed recreation site is allowed for a period not longer than 14 days, except as otherwise posted. After this time, you must move to another campground or dispersed site for at least 24 hours.
- Campers must occupy the campsite the first night.
- Eight people and two motorized vehicles are allowed per campsite with a maximum of one RV or camper trailer and two tents per camping site or three tents per camping site. There is additional parking space near the self-service fee station.
- Enjoy your visit to the Ottawa National Forest. If you have any questions, please call (906)-932-1330.
- Don't move firewood: To limit the spread of invasive tree-killing pests, firewood from outside the area is not permitted. Some states have quarantines and may confiscate your firewood. Please help protect our forests from invasive species by obtaining your firewood at or near your camping destination and burning it on-site. Visit dontmovefirewood.org for more information. Gathering of dead and down wood within the camping area for use during stay is permissible.
- Generators are allowed but only between .
- Campsite "switching" is not permitted. You must occupy the campsite that you made a reservation for unless you have received prior permission from the Ottawa National Forest.
- This campground is operated by Camp Host, LLC under a special use permit with the Ottawa National Forest.
- No water available at campground for entire 2026 season. Please plan accordingly. We are sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
