Our second trip to McKeever cabin. This time in the snow! Enjoyed snowshoeing to and around for the weekend. The wood burning stove kept the cabin very cozy and warm. Well was frozen so did have to filter water from nearby stream to supplement our supply. Well worth the drive from downstate.

We had a great stay overall. The walk back was a little hillier than we expected and I was glad we brought our WheelEEZ beach cart to haul gear back and forth. We beat the bugs in early May and had wet weather most of the time but it was still beautiful and our last day was sunny. We enjoyed cooking on the wood-burning stove and enjoyed the ranger visit and helped stack firewood in the shed. The outhouse is well ventilated at the top and bottom. I would imagine when bugs are bad this would make using the toilet a challenge at times.

One major issue is the water pump. When we arrived on Sunday evening and went to get water for the pups I pumped a long time before gritty water came out. We had brought a camping jug with 5 gallons of water from home so that sufficed. I counted the number of pumps it took to get water on May 5, 2021 and hit 200 full pumps without a drop of water coming out. This to me is a major issue when one expects a decent source of drinking water. I failed to pack my water filter and will not make this mistake again when cabin camping. The ranger stated the water was tested every month and the grit wasn't an issue during the firewood delivery. I called the office upon returning home to let them know I could not get water out of the pump.

Pack food and cooking items in totes, I think we use a 17-gallon tote. They fit under the bed's well and keep the mice out of food, and fit the beach cart well. Bring TP and a way to filter water and you should be all set to enjoy this beautiful cabin. No Verizon, which basically went dead just south of M28. We had a Bivy satellite communicator in case of emergency or if any family needed to get in contact with us.

Very grateful to have this place. Only real complaint was that the bunk beds near the door smelled like cat pee. You can smell it sometime outside the front door too. Not sure if this is some kind of mouse repellant or if someone brought their cat. Or maybe it's something else, but it reminded me of how my grandma's place smelled when she had old cats that peed on the floors. There are mouse nests in the window frames, and we definitely saw one running around. But that seems like it comes with the territory. Otherwise we had a very nice time.
