Mckeever Cabin

The cabin is an excellent place to visit. My wife and I stayed for a week. I would recommend a stay of that length. McKeever Lake is beautiful, fishing is mediocre. Unless you are lucky and hook a muskie. The water pump needs to be replaced. I had to pump 20 times just to start a trickle. After 150-200 pumps the trickle produced a half bucket. Each pump is very hard so this is a problem. I wish they would replace it before September when I am going back again. Overall an excellent destination.

Secluded little cabin in the middle of the woods. Didn't see another person unless we ventured out of the area. Perfect quiet getaway.

It’s a mile into the forest to park. Unload at the gate, then go park in the designated are. Then it’s roughly 600 steps back to the cabin, up/down hills. Yes, I counted. Bring a wagon or sled to pack stuff in/out to make it easier, maybe a portable shower or something or the sort. There is a hand pump for water half way down the hill towards the lake. Bring your own bucket/container. Loved the time there. Will be staying longer next time, seeing we now know what to expect.

The mattresses are similar to bunkbed bunkie mattresses, however, these are innerspring mattresses with no padding. Some of the springs have been sprung. We did flip over the mattresses, yet you’re better off bringing a sleeping bag, yoga/sleeping mat.

Might want to bring some 409 cleaner to clean off the counter and metal area. A little dirt never heard anyone however I have no idea when that metal area was cleaned off.

There is a table with two long benches, two sets of bunkbeds, the woodstove and small countertop. Outside is a nice deck, picnic table, grill and fire pit. The wood for these woodstove has already been split for you. However, the wood for the fire ring needs to be gathered from the surrounding area. There is an ax in the woodshed. The Park Rangers, in Munising, were very easy to talk to you and had good information.

We bought a new notebook and started it. The others were full. It was nice reading what other people had done and experienced. I did read that someone had actually paddled in from the lake and brought stuff on their boat to the campground instead of having to pack it in. Nice thinking! If you are not used to complete silence at night, bring a battery powered fan. It is exactly that, dead quiet. It was great! We did enjoy the time there. You will definitely get your steps in.

Excellent getaway! Fishing is spotty but there are huge muskies in the lake. Beautiful surroundings, great trails. The cabin is basic but very nice. The water pump needs replacing. Carrying drinking water in is much easier than using the pump.

If you are thinking about making a visit to this cabin do not delay! You will be so glad you did. The road leading in had monster size puddles that my small car could just barely handle, so depending on the weather I think having 4-wheel drive would be good. The short hike in from the parking lot means not overpacking since it's a 7-10 minute walk. No bad though, and so short enough to make a few trips if you want to bring in some creature comforts. The beds had padding on them, and so no need for sleeping pad. I would recommend a lantern to hang up over the table for the evening if you want to read or write. The lake is beautiful and pristine, and the trails surrounding the cabin looked wonderful. I didn't get to explore because the two days I was there, a rare early-October winter storm hit the Upper Peninsula meaning it rained and snowed the two days I was there. Still, I had such an incredible time just cozied up by the fire, listening to the rain, the crackle of the fire, the quiet... Very peaceful. A special place.
