Ausable River Camping

The site was nice with ample flat ground and a fire pit. The river is visible through the trees, and the trees surrounding the site provide a wind break. I would have liked the trail between the road and the campsite to be better maintained so the bottom of my car didn't scrape the ground as I entered and exited. The site is fairly remote from other campgrounds, which is great. Unfortunately somebody about a mile away was running very noisy equipment (probably a generator) at night and in the morning, which made it more difficult to enjoy the peace of nature and to sleep.

During the day, we visited the nearby Lumberman's Monument on the other side of the river and hiked 4 miles from there to Iargo Springs and then back. It's a largely beautiful hike, with great overlooks onto the Au Sable River and nice springs to check out.

Not many things to do. This was my second time and have seen everything there is to see in the area. Most are scenic overlooks.

Stunningly beautiful, can’t wait to go back.

A beautiful camping site on the side of the river

Quiet weekend on the river. Very large rustic spot. Bring firewood for the ring. Saw swans, geese, loons, ducks, woodpeckers, and chickadees. Went into Oscoda for some craft beers at Wiltse's, good food too.

Beautiful place to camp!

Sawmill point, overlooking Au Sable, quiet solitude, Loons and their mournful call, trumpeter Swans, sunsets. Sandy but level sites, water access from 50 ft. bluff only for those with better knees than mine. Deadfall wood is mainly ,burns but smokes, poplar, mix it with some store-bought ($7 a bundle, ouch) for better results ,pit toilets within walking, byo water. Verizon 1-2 bars. All in all, a good time.
Reservation system needs some tweaking, entire campsite showed reserved on the website but there were no other campers but us there, rule #1 says, site must be occupied within 24 hours of start date or it goes back in the system, reissued, this isn't happening, asked helpful ranger at Lumberman's Monument about it and he seemed to agree, although he did mention that if the one with the reservation doesn't show they should be calling to inform them, this also isn't happening in all cases and in order to avoid a confrontation with campers over who gets the reserved site after a no-call, no-show they, they forest service, just keep it reserved, rules are rules, I say, you agree with them when you reserve. Will be returning in the fall most definitely.

A beautiful site, far enough away from others that we never saw our "neighbors". Wonderful views with lots of wildlife to watch

This is a phenomenal spot. Site is long & skinny, providing lots of river frontage.

A couple things to note:
- River can create a “funnel” effect with the wind, directing it down the river’s path snd directly into your camp. Bring stakes.
- There is a privy path off of camp, with a couple semi-permanent camp latrines set up.
- Camping mid-May, there was a LOT of fallen wood. We were not hurting for firewood.
- That terrifying noise you hear is a bullfrog.
