Site 072D - Huge site - Absolute privacy - we had Verizon Wireless phone service when needed on the site. There are a couple trails down to the river but VERY steep, we didn't venture down with the kids (4 & 6).

We really enjoy camping at the Au Sable river. Each site has it's own uniqueness to it. We recently purchased kayaks and it has really opened up a whole new world for us. The river is gorgeous and the nights are peaceful. We have heard some barred owls and even seen a few eagles not to mention plenty of wood peckers. We hope everyone can become better stewards of the land that serves us so well. Make sure to pack it in and leave the place better than you found it. We were humbled to view the Neowise comet this past weekend while floating on top of the river. A moment I will never forget! There was also a huge storm that rolled through the area so there was alot of downed trees on the path. Beautiful place

I’m almost too afraid to post a raving review because o want to be able to book this site at my leisure. We stayed at site 61. Although it’s a bit of a joke from the parking lot to this spot, it’s well worth the trek (nothing a wagon can’t handle. Being it’s the last site in this grouping, you don’t have people walking by to get to their site. The after access and view of Cooke Dam Pond are both amazing. This was our 2nd time at this site and we most definitely plan on heading there again soon.

Not recommended for the faint hearted if you plan on walking into this one. It's about a .6 mile stretch down and up several hills, but when you get there it is worth it. This was the most isolated site we have stayed at yet and it was beautiful. Plenty of shade, lots of firewood around, with some awesome downed trees to use as tables. We had a blast! Little to no cell service with Verizon.

The river access on this site needs to be greatly improved. Otherwise, beautiful campsite!

Make sure to bring a saw, a lot of wood for fire will need to be cut down. Been picked over near camp so may have to venture out of the clearing for wood. Great site have been here over 7 times.

We stayed at site 11D (a.k.a.Stairway to Heaven). We love this site as it has a horseshoe driveway which makes it easy to get our truck and trailer through. It’s right on ORV trail 96 so you can hit the trails right from the site. There are stairs/trail to the river from the site with a stream that runs across part of the trail. Beautiful views of the Ausable River and minutes away from the dam where you can launch canoe/kayak/tubes. The trip from the dam back to the campsite takes about 1 hour without stops. Bobcat Creek is a stop along the way. Love primitive camping on the Ausable River!!

Designated campsites are spread along 55 miles of river shoreline between the AuSable River Access at 4001 Bridge (7 miles northwest of Glennie, MI) to near the Whirlpool AuSable River Access (4 miles west of Oscoda, MI).
